📋 Summary

The Parable of the Stingy Merchant

In the 200th episode of Circle Round, titled "The Fast Feast," listeners are presented with a moral tale rooted in Jewish tradition. The story centers on Ezekiel, a wealthy but notoriously "stingy" man who lives in a vast house with "dozens of chimneys and hundreds of rooms." Despite his immense fortune, Ezekiel lacks basic human compassion. When a severe drought leads to a famine, while other citizens open their "silos and pantries" to share resources, Ezekiel chooses to exploit the crisis. He hoards his grain, selling it at exorbitant prices and refusing any form of credit, famously declaring, "I am a businessman, and I am not... in the business of giving away anything for free."

The Governor’s Clever Intervention

News of Ezekiel’s greed eventually reaches the governor, a "kind-hearted, quick-witted woman" who decides to teach him a lesson. Rather than punishing him through traditional legal means, she employs a psychological strategy. She invites Ezekiel to a dinner party, knowing he will arrive famished. Upon his arrival, she imposes two strict rules through her butler: he must not ask questions and he must be "copious with your commendations" and "fruitful with your flattery," regardless of the truth.

The Experience of Hunger

Throughout the evening, the governor engages in a cruel but necessary charade. She serves course after course—fish, soup, roast beef—but every time a plate is placed in front of Ezekiel, the butler promptly whisks it away, claiming, "Allow me to get that out of your way, sir." Ezekiel is forced to watch the governor eat while he remains starving. True to the rules, he is compelled to praise the experience, lying through his teeth by calling the non-existent meal "absolutely marvelous."

The Turning Point: Food for Thought

As the night progresses, Ezekiel’s frustration turns into profound realization. Lying in a guest bed that feels as "soft as snow," he reflects on his suffering. He realizes that the governor, who has plenty of food, is intentionally withholding it from him. He suddenly recognizes his own hypocrisy: "It dawned on him exactly who would do that sort of thing. And exactly who had done that sort of thing... to countless hungry people who had crowded his door."

A Lasting Transformation

The experience serves as the "food for thought" the governor intended. The next morning, a changed Ezekiel returns home and begins "freely giving out food to everyone who lined up at his door." His transformation extends beyond the famine; he begins treating his staff with respect, finally learning their names and providing them with a "well-deserved raise." The story concludes by highlighting that Ezekiel’s shift from a "greedy bully" to a generous benefactor was achieved not through direct confrontation, but through the profound impact of experiencing the very hardship he had previously inflicted on others.
