📋 Summary

The Farmer's Coin: A Lesson in Generosity

The Humble Farmer and the Greedy Landlord

The story centers on a hardworking but struggling rice farmer who faces a disastrous harvest due to unpredictable weather. Desperate to survive the winter, she approaches a wealthy, unsympathetic landlord for a loan of one bag of rice. The landlord, displaying immense greed, agrees to the loan only on the condition that she repays him with "a dozen bags of rice" by springtime—an impossible demand for a single farmer outside of the growing season. This interaction highlights the stark contrast between the farmer’s "diligent" nature and the landlord’s exploitative mindset.

The Magic Coin and the Act of Kindness

During a harsh winter, a mysterious, shivering old woman arrives at the farmer’s cottage. Despite having barely any food left, the farmer selflessly shares her last bowl of rice with the stranger. In gratitude, the woman gifts the farmer a "smooth, dull coin" covered in strange writing. The farmer soon discovers that this coin is magical: when placed in an empty bowl or bag, it instantly fills it with "fluffy, fragrant, steaming rice."

The Cycle of Giving vs. The Cycle of Greed

Instead of using the magic coin to enrich herself or simply meeting the landlord's demand, the farmer chooses to distribute the rice to other villagers struggling through the freezing winter. When the landlord discovers the source of her sudden prosperity, his greed takes over. He disguises himself as a "poor fellow" to infiltrate her home, eventually stealing the "dull, tarnished coin" while the farmer is distracted.

The Karma of the Coin

As the landlord attempts to flee with his stolen prize, he sprints across the frozen lake. His greed leads to his downfall; he slips on the ice, causing the coin to fly from his hand and fall through a crack into the frigid water. He loses the coin forever, illustrating the narrative’s moral that greed often results in self-sabotage.

A Reward for Community Spirit

Following the loss of the coin, the farmer is worried about her future, but she is soon overwhelmed by the kindness of the villagers she helped. They arrive with baskets of food, including fish caught from the lake. In a stroke of poetic justice, the farmer discovers the magic coin inside the belly of a carp she intended to cook. The story concludes with the farmer thriving, not just because of the magic, but because her "generous spirit" fostered a community that supported her in return. The tale serves as a poignant reminder that true wealth lies in kindness and the willingness to "lend a hand to those in need."
