The Empty Barrel: A Tale of Wit and Transformation

In the Moroccan-inspired folktale The Empty Barrel, featured on the Circle Round podcast, we follow the story of Layla, a woodworker whose mundane chore of fetching water leads to an extraordinary odyssey. This narrative explores themes of resilience, cleverness, and the power of outsmarting one's oppressor.

The Mystery of the Vanishing Water

Layla, a woodworker living in a humble cottage, finds her daily routine disrupted when her water barrel—which she diligently fills at the river—is discovered empty every morning. Suspecting foul play or a supernatural occurrence, she decides to hide inside the barrel to uncover the truth. At midnight, she experiences a startling revelation: "I hear wings... I think this barrel is lifting off the ground and now it's flying."

The Albatross and the Diamond Tree

Upon landing on a steep cliff, Layla discovers that her barrel was transported by a talking albatross. She soon learns the tragic history of the creature: it was once a human, transformed into a bird by an "evil witch" who sought to exploit the villagers. The witch forced these transformed birds to fetch fresh water for her precious "diamond tree." The stakes are dire; as the albatross explains, "Whenever we get too tired to carry water, the witch turns us... into something else," specifically, the diamonds that adorn the tree.

Layla’s Intellectual Resistance

When the witch confronts Layla, intending to turn her into an albatross, Layla chooses a path of psychological warfare rather than physical combat. She challenges the witch’s ego, feigning skepticism about the witch's powers. By asking, "If you're truly so powerful, then can you turn all those albatrosses back into people again?", Layla manipulates the witch into reversing the spells.

Through a series of ego-driven demonstrations, the witch restores the villagers from albatrosses and diamonds back into human form. Finally, Layla baits the ultimate trap: "What would really, truly convince me that you... are the most powerful witch in all the world, would be if you transformed yourself... into a diamond." The witch, blinded by her own hubris, complies. Layla acts immediately, seizing the diamond and flinging it over the cliff into the sea, effectively destroying the witch.

A Newfound Prosperity

Following the defeat of the witch, the villagers face the problem of returning home without the magic of flight. Layla, utilizing her skills as a woodworker, suggests they "take the diamond tree here and... turn it into a boat." Upon dismantling the tree, they discover a chest filled with real diamonds.

Layla returns home not only with a legendary story but with the financial means to improve her life. She uses the proceeds from her diamond to "build a fine, deep well beside her humble cottage," ensuring she never has to endure the arduous chore of fetching water again. The story concludes by emphasizing that Layla’s success was not born of magic, but of her "smarts and imagination," serving as a timeless lesson on creative problem-solving.
