📋 Summary

The Dragon and His Grandmother: A Summary

The Desperate Alliance

The story begins with three soldiers, old friends, facing the grim reality of war. Starving and fearful of the "dungeon" should they desert, they find themselves trapped in a cornfield. Their salvation arrives in the form of an "invisible" dragon who offers them a life of luxury in exchange for seven years of service after an initial seven-year period of freedom. Driven by hunger and the looming threat of imprisonment, they agree to the dragon's terms, signing a contract under "dragon law."

The Life of Splendor

To facilitate their new lifestyle, the dragon provides them with a "little whip." By whipping the grass, they can summon gold coins, allowing them to live as "great lords" with horses and carriages. Despite their newfound wealth, the soldiers remain virtuous, ensuring that "there would not be a beggar left in their wake" by donating generously to the needy. However, as the initial seven years draw to a close, two of the soldiers become "terribly anxious and frightened" about the impending debt to the dragon.

Seeking the Grandmother's Counsel

The third soldier, confident and pragmatic, refuses to succumb to despair. Following the advice of an old woman, he discovers a "tumble-down building of rocks" in the woods. There, he meets the dragon's grandmother, a figure "strangely shaped and scaled," who takes pity on him. She hides him in a cellar beneath the floorboards, instructing him to remain still so he can overhear the dragon's secrets. That night, the dragon returns and, boasting of his cleverness, reveals his riddle to his grandmother: "There is a thing that nothing is, and yet it has a name. It is sometimes tall and sometimes short, joins our talks, joins our sport, and plays at every game."

The Final Confrontation

Armed with this knowledge, the soldier returns to his comrades. When the seven years expire, the dragon arrives, fully expecting to take them to "mine gold in cramped caverns." Confidently, the soldier provides the answer: "It is a shadow." Defeated by his own contract and the soldier's wit, the dragon is "forced to leave them be" and flies off in a fury. The soldiers maintain their fortunes, build homes, and continue to visit the dragon's grandmother for "cookies and tea," living happily ever after.
