📋 Summary

The Tragic End of a New Beginning

In the summer of 1987, Susan Woods, a 30-year-old woman from Stephenville, Texas, was finally beginning to rebuild her life after a painful divorce. Having been abandoned by her ex-husband, Michael Woods—who left behind a trail of "viciously mean tape recordings" and "cruel notes"—Susan had fallen into a deep depression. Her path to recovery was paved by a close-knit social circle known as the "Round Table," which included her best friend Cindy Hallmark, Cindy’s boyfriend Roy Hayes, and Cindy’s cousin, Scott Hatley. This group offered Susan a sense of community and safety, helping her overcome her isolation.

However, this newfound peace was shattered on July 26, 1987. After a weekend of normalcy, Susan was found dead in her home by her father, Joe Atkins, two days later. The crime scene was harrowing: Susan had been sexually assaulted, strangled with an electrical cord, smothered with a pillow, and left in her bathtub. The brutality of the scene, combined with the fact that her windows were "nailed shut," suggested a killer she likely knew and trusted, given the lack of forced entry.

The Futile Search for a Suspect

Initial investigations were plagued by mismanagement and assumptions. Sergeant Donnie Hensley, who had a personal connection to Susan’s father, was sidelined by Lieutenant Ken Maltby, who prioritized his own career advancement. The investigation focused on three primary suspects:

  • Michael Woods: Susan’s ex-husband, viewed by everyone as the prime suspect due to his past abuse and the "awful messages" he had left behind. However, his alibi in Indianapolis, though poorly verified at the time, kept him from being charged.
  • J.C. Bauman: A bartender Susan had dated briefly, who admitted to being intimate with her in the same bathtub where she was found. Despite his suspicious behavior, his prints were never linked to the crime.
  • Roy Hayes: A member of the "Round Table" who knew the layout of Susan's house intimately. His interest in Dungeons & Dragons—a game then widely stigmatized as being linked to "devil worship"—led investigators to briefly entertain theories of a "dark ritual."

Despite Hensley’s persistent efforts, the case went cold for nearly two decades. The palm prints found on the bathtub remained unidentified because there was no centralized database to match them against in 1987.

A Breakthrough from the Past

In 2006, Lieutenant Don Miller reopened the case. Utilizing the FBI’s modern national fingerprint database, he ran the mystery palm prints and received a hit: Scott Hatley, the younger cousin of Cindy Hallmark and a fellow member of the "Round Table."

Evidence revealed that Hatley had been present at the gatherings where Susan felt safe. A week before the murder, Susan had simply smiled at him—a gesture that, according to the psychological reconstruction, triggered a "darkness" within Hatley. His later-discovered diaries contained "handwritten rantings about demons, monsters and this deal with the devil," revealing a disturbed individual who sought to blame an "outside presence" for his violent urges. Hatley eventually confessed to the murder in his journals. He pleaded guilty, served 11 years of a 30-year sentence, and died of cancer years later, finally closing the long-unsolved chapter of Susan Woods’ tragic death.

📖 Transcript

One night in December of 2009, a man dug through a pile of papers and photo albums inside of an RV parked in Texas.
This man had recently bought the trailer after its previous owner had died, and it was full of junk that he was now trying to sort through.
As the man rifled through documents, he stumbled upon a stack of old notebooks, and he opened one and began reading it.
And as he did, he felt his heartbeat pick up, because these notebooks were actually diaries and they were full of handwritten rantings about demons, monsters and this deal with the devil.
But that really was not what scared this guy.
What really scared him was at some point discovering the writer's horrifying confession.
