📋 Summary

The Legend of the Unst Pirate

In this episode of Easy Stories in English, host Ariel Goodbody recounts a Scottish folk tale titled "The Cave of the Danishman." Set on the Shetland island of Unst, the story explores the aftermath of 15th-century political shifts, specifically when the islands transitioned from Norwegian rule back to Scotland in 1472. Without the protection of the Norwegian king, the islands became vulnerable to "raiding" by Danish pirates. One such pirate, known as the "Denchman," terrorized the island using his fast and formidable ship, the Erna (Old Norse for "eagle").

The Stranded Pirate and the Villagers' Cruelty

During a violent storm, the Erna crashed into the rocks at Flubersgurdy, leaving the pirate stranded in a sea cave. The villagers, long victims of his raids, initially rejoiced at his presumed demise. However, upon discovering he survived and was trapped, they opted for a cold-blooded approach. Rather than risking a fight with a man they considered "as strong as three men combined," they decided to let him die of starvation. They mocked him daily, turning his refuge into what they called the "Denchman’s Had"—a term implying he was no more than a small, trapped animal.

The Secret Intervention

The plot takes a turn when the villagers plan to end the pirate's life with a barrage of "sharp stones." They prepare the richest farmer's boat for the attack, but the vessel mysteriously vanishes. When they arrive at the cave in a different boat, they find it empty. Months later, the Erna—miraculously repaired—returned to the island flying a white flag of peace. The Denchman returned the farmer's boat, laden with "silverware, gold jewellery, silk dresses," and supplies, crediting his survival and change of heart to the farmer's three "fair-haired daughters."

A Lesson in Humanity and Strength

The twist reveals that the three young women, defying the patriarchal expectations of their village, had secretly rescued the pirate. They brought him "baskets of food, drink and warm clothing" while the rest of the village plotted his murder. The eldest daughter confessed that she had even held the pirate's own sword to his throat, forcing him to "swear he would never raid this island again."

Ultimately, the story serves as a profound critique of the villagers' initial "monstrous" desire to let a man die alone. The daughters proved that true strength lies not in the "heartless" violence of the mob, but in the courage to show mercy. As the eldest daughter noted, "No man is entirely heartless," and by appealing to the pirate's honor, they secured lasting peace for Unst. The tale concludes with the pirate keeping his word, never returning to raid the island again, while the daughters earned both the villagers' respect and the admiration of the local men.
