📋 Summary

The Discovery of a Crime

On November 1, 2002, the quiet town of Navasota, Texas, was shaken by the murder of Lonnie Turner, a respected mortician and pillar of the community. The investigation began when a police officer, during a smoke break near the crime scene, discovered a "makeshift mask" discarded in a muddy ditch. This mask, crafted from a "gym shoe bag," would eventually prove to be the critical piece of evidence needed to identify the killer.

The Suspects and Their Suspicious Behaviors

Detective Travis Higginbotham initially focused his investigation on three individuals: Lonnie’s son, Junior; his brother, Lawson; and his godson, James White. Each presented a unique set of red flags.

  • Lawson Turner: He was found inside the house when the police arrived, yet he claimed to have entered and looked into Lonnie’s bedroom without noticing the "huge dark red streak of blood" on the wall or his brother's body on the floor, a story the detective found "very suspicious."
  • Junior Turner: Though he discovered his father's body, his behavior was erratic. He fled the house without checking for a pulse and was found carrying a handgun into the police station. Furthermore, a ballistics test confirmed that the 9mm pistol found under his mattress was the "murder weapon."
  • James White: Lonnie’s godson had a history of theft, having previously forged checks from Lonnie’s office. Despite his cooperative demeanor, his motive and access to the home made him a prime person of interest.

Unraveling the Mystery

While Junior stood to benefit from the inheritance, the investigation shifted decisively when DNA results from the "makeshift mask" were processed. The evidence linked the crime directly to James White. It was revealed that James had planned a robbery, knowing Lonnie kept his "back door unlocked" and stored cash in his bedroom.

The Tragic Conclusion

According to the final reconstruction, James entered the home intending to commit a burglary. When the bedroom door made a "loud creaking sound," Lonnie woke up. In a panic, James fired his weapon, killing his godfather. He fled the scene without taking the $7,000 in cash from the unlocked safe, essentially committing a murder for nothing. Following his arrest, James confessed to the crime, though he unsuccessfully attempted to shift the blame onto Junior. James White was ultimately sentenced to 20 years in prison, bringing a somber end to the case of a man who had previously "forgiven him for the theft," only to be betrayed by the person he treated like family.

This officer had been working all night and really needed a break.
So he went down to the sidewalk and lit a cigarette.
And as he smoked, his eyes fell on a muddy ditch that ran alongside the street, and he saw something in the ditch that just seemed out of place.
