📋 Summary

The Boy Who Drew Cats: A Tale of Art and Protection

The Artistic Misfit

In a small Japanese village, a young, clever boy was deemed unfit for the physical labor of farm life. His parents, recognizing his intellectual aptitude, sent him to a local temple to serve as an acolyte. However, the boy possessed a singular obsession: he loved to "draw cats." Despite the priest's efforts to steer him toward academic study, the boy decorated every available surface—temple walls, pillars, and screens—with his feline doodles. His refusal to stop led the priest to conclude that while the boy was not suited for the priesthood, he possessed the "genius of an artist."

The Mysterious Warning

Before sending the boy away to seek his fortune, the priest offered a cryptic piece of advice: "Avoid large places at night. Keep to small." The boy, uncertain of the meaning, traveled to a distant, larger temple. Unbeknownst to him, this temple had been abandoned due to a terrifying "goblin" that haunted the premises, leaving warriors "battered and confused" after nocturnal encounters. The boy, unaware of the danger, arrived at dusk, cleaned the neglected temple, and discovered "blessed" ink that seemed to possess a life of its own.

The Battle of the Painted Cats

Driven by his passion, the boy used the magical ink to cover the temple screens with lifelike cats. As midnight approached, he recalled the priest’s warning and wisely chose to sleep inside a "little cabinet" rather than the expansive main hall. During the night, a monstrous, giant rat—the true form of the goblin—emerged. A fierce, unseen battle ensued, shaking the temple.

A Legend Born

When the morning sun rose, the boy emerged to find the temple floor covered in "strange purple blood" and the massive rat lying dead. The mystery was solved when he observed his own artwork: the cats he had painted appeared "frazzled" and bore traces of the goblin's blood on their claws. His drawings had come to life to defend the temple. Ultimately, the boy was celebrated by the villagers and the local priests, transforming from a failed acolyte into a "very famous artist." His legacy persisted, with his legendary cat paintings said to remain, "ready to defend Japan should the need arise."
