📋 Summary

The Bolt of Silk: A Tale of Wit and Harmony

In the folklore-inspired story The Bolt of Silk, the listener is introduced to Nyla, a kind old woman whose daily ritual of sitting on a bench in the town square represents the embodiment of peace and ease. This tranquility is abruptly challenged by a mysterious sorceress, who prides herself on "sowing the seeds of suffering and sorrow, tumult and turmoil." The narrative explores the power of human ingenuity against malevolent forces and the restoration of harmony through a clever, albeit risky, ruse.

The Sorceress’s Challenge

When the sorceress arrives in the town square, she immediately uses her powers to turn the townspeople against one another, creating "pure mayhem." Nyla, outraged by this disruption, decides to confront the sorceress. The sorceress, viewing herself as an unmatched architect of chaos, scoffs at the idea that a "little old lady" could ever cause as much distress as she does. This leads to a high-stakes bet: if Nyla can prove she is capable of creating deeper discord than a sorceress, the sorceress must leave the town forever.

The Deceptive Plan

Nyla’s target is a famously happy couple: a cloth merchant and her baker husband. Nyla orchestrates a two-part scheme designed to trigger suspicion and jealousy. First, she approaches the merchant with a fabricated story about a daughter in love with a married man who demands a rare "bolt of silk" as a sign of affection. By purchasing this silk, Nyla plants the seed of doubt regarding infidelity.

Next, Nyla visits the baker, feigning illness to gain entry into his home. While the baker is occupied, she hides the gold-wrapped silk behind a pillow on the couple's sofa. When the merchant returns home and discovers the mysterious package, her mind immediately connects the dots to Nyla’s earlier story. She concludes, "How could my love betray me like this?" and flees, her heart broken by the perceived betrayal.

Restoring Harmony

Observing the success of her plan from the bushes, Nyla successfully drives the sorceress away. However, Nyla understands that if she does not rectify the situation, she would be "no better than the sorceress." She returns to the cloth merchant and crafts a masterful explanation, claiming she had accidentally left the silk behind while resting in the baker’s home earlier that day.

Upon hearing that it was her own husband who had kindly taken care of the "dizzy" old woman, the merchant realizes the misunderstanding. The tension dissolves, and the couple is reunited. Nyla, having successfully purged the town of the sorceress and restored the couple’s "marital bliss," retires from her brief foray into mischief. The story concludes with Nyla returning to her peaceful routine, serving as a reminder that while chaos can be easily manufactured, the restoration of harmony requires both wit and a moral compass.
