📋 Summary

The Bearded Lake: The Perils of Unchecked Ambition

The Humble Beginnings and the Winter of Despair

Our story centers on Farmer Davies, an "honest and humble fellow" living in the rugged, wind-swept mountains of Wales. Initially, he was content with his modest life, waking at the "crack of dawn" to tend his cattle and enjoying simple meals in his stone farmhouse. However, a severe winter brought "great frosty clumps" of snow, leaving his herd "scraggy and gaunt." As his livelihood withered, the farmer’s life became a struggle for survival, with his meals reduced to a mere "crust of bread" or a "boiled potato." Driven by desperation, he wandered to the Bearded Lake—a place believed to be a "doorway to the other world"—and wept, begging for help.

The Gift of Prosperity

Unknown to the farmer, the lake was home to "magical, mystical creatures" who listened to his pleas. The next morning, he discovered a "pearl white cow" that seemed to "sparkle in the sun." He named her Blodwen, meaning "white flower." Blodwen was no ordinary animal; she produced milk that was "richer and purer" than any ever tasted, sparking a commercial frenzy. Farmer Davies quickly transitioned from a struggling laborer to the "richest farmer in all of Wales." His success expanded into a massive operation, selling milk, butter, cheese, and cream, eventually leading him to abandon his humble roots. He began to "laze in bed until noon," hired others to perform his labor, and indulged in "five-course feasts."

The Price of Greed

True to the warning that "trying to have too much of a good thing can spoil everything," the farmer’s ambition grew insatiable. Despite his immense wealth, he decided to sell Blodwen, disregarding the warnings of his farmhands who noted that the cow appeared "enchanted" and had "not aged a day." When he attempted to force her to market, the air was filled with a familiar, "otherworldly sound"—the same ethereal singing that had haunted the lake years prior.

The Return to the Lake

In a dramatic turn of events, Blodwen broke free, leading the entire herd in a stampede back to the Bearded Lake. They vanished beneath the surface, and in their place, "tiny water lilies" emerged, each as "bright and white as a pearl." The story concludes that these lilies serve as an "eternal reminder" of the farmer who was "foolish enough to let his humility wither."

A Final Reflection on Gratitude

This folktale serves as a poignant reminder that contentment is not found in accumulation, but in the practice of gratitude. As the narrator suggests, focusing on what one possesses rather than what is lacking is essential for a balanced life. By failing to remain thankful for his miraculous gift, Farmer Davies lost everything, illustrating that greed effectively destroys the very blessings that once brought prosperity.
