📋 Summary

The Investigation of the Speckled Band

In this gripping mystery, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are visited by Helen Stoner, a terrified young woman living at the ancestral home of Stoke Moran. Helen’s life is in danger, and she seeks Holmes’s help to uncover the truth behind the tragic death of her twin sister, Julia, two years prior.

The Troubled History of Stoke Moran

Helen explains that her stepfather, Dr. Grimsby Roylott, is a man of violent temper who previously served time in prison after killing a man in India. Following the death of Helen’s mother, the family fortune dwindled, and the sisters became isolated, surrounded by their stepfather's eccentric collection of wild animals, including a cheetah and a baboon.

Julia’s death occurred just before her wedding. On that fateful night, Helen heard a "whistling sound" and a "loud clanging sound." Julia stumbled into the hallway, dying in Helen’s arms while gasping the cryptic final words: "Oh, Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!" Despite a thorough investigation, the cause of death remained a mystery, as the room was locked from the inside and no poison was detected.

Uncovering the Clues

After Dr. Roylott bursts into Holmes’s office and displays his immense strength by bending a metal poker, Holmes becomes convinced that Helen is in grave danger. Upon visiting Stoke Moran, Holmes identifies several suspicious features: a "bell rope" that doesn't work, an "air vent" connecting the rooms, and a bed "clamped to the floor." Holmes realizes these are not mere architectural quirks, but components of a diabolical trap. He instructs Helen to move into her sister's old room for the night, signaling him with a lamp when it is safe to enter.

The Fatal Resolution

That night, Holmes and Watson lie in wait in the dark. Suddenly, they hear a "quiet hissing sound." Holmes strikes a match, revealing the true nature of the "speckled band"—a deadly "swamp adder" slithering through the air vent.

Holmes attacks the snake, which retreats back into Dr. Roylott’s room. A shriek of agony follows. Upon entering the doctor’s room, they find Roylott dead, with the snake coiled around his head. Holmes explains the mechanics of the crime to Watson: the doctor had trained the snake to crawl down the bell rope, lured by the sound of a "whistle" and a dish of milk, to kill his stepdaughters and prevent them from marrying, thereby protecting his inheritance. Ultimately, the cruel architect of the murder became the victim of his own "strange murder weapon," bringing an end to the terror at Stoke Moran.
