📋 Summary

The Unexplained Discovery

On the morning of June 5, 2012, Eric Samoa, a top-performing luxury car salesman in Bethesda, Maryland, was found dead in his high-rise apartment. Initially, responding officers suspected a suicide, as the apartment was locked from the inside with no signs of forced entry. However, Detective Dimitri Reuven, upon inspecting the scene, noted the absence of a firearm, leading him to conclude that this was a calculated homicide rather than a self-inflicted act.

The Investigation and the Red Herrings

Detective Reuven’s investigation was initially complicated by the victim's complex personal life. His family pointed toward his former girlfriend, Denise Harrington, who had recently ended their relationship due to Eric's infidelity. However, during questioning, Denise provided a credible alibi and appeared genuinely shocked by his death.

As Reuven dug deeper, a neighbor revealed that Eric had been frequently seen with another woman, Katrina Benn, a nurse who had recently moved from Mississippi to work at the National Institutes of Health. During her interview, Katrina claimed she had seen a "tall, skinny looking drug dealer with a scraggly beard" in Eric's apartment at 5 a.m. on the morning of his death, suggesting this man—later identified as William Woodfork—was the perpetrator. While Woodfork had indeed sold marijuana to Eric, he denied any involvement in the murder. Police eventually recovered a .380 caliber handgun from Woodfork’s residence, but ballistics testing confirmed it was not the murder weapon, stalling the investigation for months.

The Breakthrough: A Trail of Evidence

Refusing to let the case go cold, Detective Reuven embarked on an exhaustive search for the missing murder weapon. He cross-referenced lists of .380 caliber handguns turned into or confiscated by police across the county. He found a promising lead in a gun discovered on the side of the Capitol Beltway just two days after the murder.

Tracing the weapon's history led Reuven to a rural pawn shop in Mississippi. Although the shop owner had surrendered his sales records to the ATF after rats damaged his storage boxes, the bureau successfully recovered the documents. The records revealed that the gun had been purchased by none other than Katrina Benn.

The Motive and Justice

The investigation reconstructed the chilling reality: Katrina, feeling used and discarded by Eric—who was juggling multiple relationships and refused to commit to her—decided to end his life. She had brought the gun to his apartment under the guise of watching a basketball game. After he fell asleep, she shot him at point-blank range, pulled the bedsheet up to hide the wound, and exited the building to go to work as if nothing had happened.

Katrina Benn was arrested at her parents' home in Mississippi. She was subsequently found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 20 years. Eric’s family credited Detective Reuven’s "patience and determination" for providing them with the closure they desperately sought.
