Let's learn how to order coffee at Starbucks.
These are the words and phrases that we are going to learn in this video.
Can I have a tall cappuccino with cinnamon on top?
Yeah.
Yeah, cinnamon on top.
Giovanna.
You can say Gigi.
G-I-G-I.
Okay, card.
It's so hot.
I'm in Florida, but most of the vocabulary and sentences that I'm going to teach here can be used anywhere English is spoken.
So once you go into the coffee shop, you either choose a place to sit and grab the menu or go up to the counter and wait in line to order.
You can then choose the coffee you like the most and use the phrases like can I get?
I'll have?
Can I have a tall coffee frappuccino with three pumps of vanilla syrup?
For example, I'd like an Americano, please.
The first thing you need to know are the names of some common coffee drinks.
There are three coffee categories for you to choose from, and we'll start off with drip and brewed coffee.
Drip coffee can be served hot or iced.
Two coffee blends commonly used by Starbucks are the Pike Place Roast with cocoa and toasted nuts and the Dark Roast, which has a bold flavor.
Yeah, this coffee's bold.
Many people will have different ideas of what these words mean when it comes to coffee.
Strong might refer to coffee that has more coffee dissolved in it.
Espresso would be considered very strong, since it has a high amount of coffee packed into a small amount of water.
Watery drip coffee would be considered weak, since it has a low amount of coffee packed into a higher amount of water.
You can brew any coffee grounds to be strong or weak by using less or more water.
Bridge tends to refer to the creamy mouthfeel of something like ice cream, or to the fullness of the taste.
It could be used to describe a coffee that tastes very smooth when you drink it, or a coffee that is slightly acidic and you can taste multiple flavors at once.
Richness is commonly associated with another concept in coffee and other drinks called body.
People may say a coffee is full-bodied when it fills your mouth with flavor and it doesn't taste watery or simple.
Bold usually refers to the intensity of the roast, bitterness, and smokiness of a coffee.
The second coffee drink category is the espresso beverages.
Espresso beverages are coffee drinks made with espresso and can be served by itself or combined with other ingredients.
For example, a latte.
A latte is a combination of espresso and steamed milk.
There's also the Americano, which is just espresso with hot water, and the cappuccino, a classic espresso drink made with espresso and frothed or foamed milk.
The third coffee category is the cold brew, frozen and blended coffees, which are served cold.
The coffee frappuccino is one example of frozen and blended coffee.
Do you know what a frappuccino is?
A coffee frappuccino is made of coffee blended with ice flavored syrups and topped with whipped cream.
Can I have a tall coffee frappuccino with three pumps of vanilla syrup?
There are also drinks like green, black, and herbal tea.
Can I have a grande cappuccino with cinnamon on top?
But it's not that simple.
You have to choose the size of your Americano or any other coffee that you want to order.
The barista I mean the person who serves you and makes you the drink will ask you which size would you like?
In response, you could answer with small, medium and large.
But if you are at starbucks, things get a bit complicated because they have different names for coffee sizes.
They use the word short to refer to a very small size, cup Tall to refer to a small cup, and the word grande to refer to a medium-sized cup.
They also have venti, which is similar to a large coffee cup, and Trenta, which is their largest coffee size.
When ordering coffee, you can customize it.
Repeat after me, customize, which means to change something to fit your own needs or preferences.
For example, you can add a topping.
Topping such as caramel drizzle, cinnamon, and whipped cream.
By the way, to drizzle means to pour a thin stream of liquid over something.
This is caramel drizzle.
Super delicious.
You can also add syrup.
You can ask for two pumps of vanilla syrup.
Yes, we use the word pump with syrup.
Can I have a tall coffee frappuccino with three pumps of vanilla syrup, please?
Can I have a grande cappuccino with cinnamon on top?
I'd like caramel drizzle on my frappuccino, please.
I'll have a venti latte with sweetener instead of sugar.
Let me grab a packet of sweetener right here.
Just gonna tear it open.
By the way, this is a stirrer.
A sweetener is a sugar substitute to make things sweet without adding real sugar.
