Pssst. Hey, Wowser fans.
Mindy here. And before we start the show– Hold on, Mindy.
I got something I want to say on the microphone.
Wait, Grandma G -Force?
Grandma G -Force is on the Tube.
You're on the what?
The Tube. Huh? The Tube, Mindy, up there in the clouds, where the videos live.
Oh, you mean YouTube?
That's what I've been saying, Mindy.
Me and Thomas Fingerling been reacting to stuff and listening to your little podcast. Oh, well, that's great!
I mean, I've been on YouTube also!
Oh, well, well, you think you're better than me?
Have you seen the one where I tested how many rubber bands it takes to make a watermelon explode?
No! Oh, well guess!
Okay, let me guess.
Two rubber bands and you just tie it around the watermelon real tight?
Oh, no. It takes a lot more than two rubber bands, Grandma G -Force.
Oh, chicken slippers.

Wild in the world! We're flying the deep.
Right away, Houston.
Ah, there's nothing quite like a good old -fashioned camping trip.
The crisp South Carolina air, the smell of a campfire, the peace and quiet of nature.
Ahh. Ha ha, J4, stop poking me with that stick.
I'm poking you with nothing, boy.
Oh! Guy Raz! She did it again!
Wow, that was me that time.
Guy Raz, G -Force and Tommy are poking me with their marshmallow sticks.
Oooh... Did someone say marshmallows?
No! Mindy, you made it back!
Yeah, sorry. I had to go to like three different gas stations just to find these marshmallows, but check it out!
Tea -lime pie -flavored marshmallows.
Super rare, super tasty.
Oh! Oh, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme.
Sounds delicious, Mindy.
Pass. Yeah, pass. We got our own snacks.
Ew. What in the? All right, G -force, what do you want?
Will, I'll take a boot.
Leather boot. Huh? All right, good choice.
You're going to eat a boot?
Yeah. Ugh. Oh, calm down.
We're gonna cook the boot first. Here we go.
Tommy! No! OK, G -force, you want the midsole or the laces?
Well, I think I'm gonna fix me up part of that hail.
Yeah, there you go.
Oh. All right. Well, who's up for some scary stories?
Yeah, let's do it. Who's gonna tell a scary story first?
Me. I got one. Fingerling, you couldn't scare a squirrel off a bird feeder.
Oh, I wouldn't be too sure about that.
I'm scared. Once upon a time, the family was goin' on vacation To a beautiful, secluded cabin in the woods We're going on vacation We're going on vacation To a beautiful, secluded cabin in the woods But when they arrived at the cabin Well, family, we've arrived at the cabin They realised Let's just open the door here and walk inside.
Something was wrong.
This is all wrong. Something horrifyingly wrong.
Oh, no. What was it?
It turns out, the beautiful, secluded cabin in the woods had no Wi -Fi.
Woo! That's it? The cabin didn't have Wi -Fi?
What do you mean? That's it.
the cabin probably only had a wired ethernet connection.
Exactly. Oooh. Ahaha!
No! It's terrifying.
Terrifyingly inconvenient, maybe.
Fangirling, that ain't scary.
This is scary. Ahem.
Once upon a time, two best friends went out to watch a movie at their local movie theater.
I love watching movies at our local movie theater.
Whoa! Me too, best friend!
And as they left the theater, both of them said goodbye to each other.
Bye, best friend. See you later, best friend!
But then, out of the nowhere's, they both walked in the same direction for a little bit.
Going the same direction, huh?
I guess so. And it was super awkward. awkward, awkward, awkward. Oh no, now they can't make eye contact probably.
I don't know here guys, these don't seem that scary to me.
Yeah me neither guy Roz.
But fear not, I've got a real good spooky story for everyone.
Sit back and watch how a pro tells a spooky story.
A long time ago, not too far from here in South Carolina, in a town called Somerville, a wife was sending her husband off to work on the railroads.
Well, I'm off to work the railroads, dear.
See you in a couple of weeks.
Wait, Mindy. Are these the same railroad tracks that we crossed to get to this campsite?
Yep, the very same guy, Roz.
Anywho, eventually, the wife's husband did return from his work on the railroad.
Hey, I'm almost home.
Oh, goody. But just before he got back to his wife, just as he was crossing the tracks, a train came rattling down the railway behind him.
Oh, no. Watch out, Hobson, you're going to get hit by that train!
Ah, hoo -ee! I'll be fine!
Aaaahh! Oh, never mind.
The train scattered his body into a thousand different pieces.
Well, looks like I made a mess.
I had a finger over there, a toe over there.
How am I ever going to put myself back together again?
It was his wife who ended up spending her remaining days retrieving the pieces of her scattered and splattered husband.
Now how in the haystack am I supposed to pick up all these pieces?
They're all over the place, Cubson!
Sorry, dear. The old lady ended up dying before she could pick up all the pieces of her husband!
So now it's said that she still spends her afterlife haunting those railroad tracks, still looking for all the guts that were strewn all over the place.
You mean I still gotta clean up his mess even after I'm dead?
They say that on some summer nights, you can still see the eerie glow from her lantern hanging in the air above the train tracks, searching for the rest of time.
Ooh, goodness. Now, that's what I call a ghost story.
I didn't like that one.
It was too scary and splattery Dennis okay, it's not a real story I'm trying to console Dennis.
Look, there's no railroad worker Dennis.
There's no old lady picking up her husband's guts piece by piece What?
Look. What is that?
It looks like a floating glowing light.
Yeah, it's the old lady.
She's back to find her husband.
What? You mean it's a ghost. No. OK, OK.
Everyone just calm down.
It is not a ghost. There's a logical scientific explanation for this.
I can explain. No way!
It's every, Dennis, for himself.
Run! No, Dennis, no. Come back.
Ugh. Well, hey, look at that.
The weird, mysterious, floating light is disappearing.
Well, it looks like I was able to scare off that ghost for everyone.
It wasn't a ghost, Grandma G -Force.
That's what I was trying to tell everyone before Dennis ran away.
Well, if it wasn't a ghost, then what was it?
It was a... It was a...
It was a... An earthquake light.
A what? That sounds made up.
Yeah, sounds like another scary story.
It's not made up. Come on, I'll explain it to you all while we look for Dennis.
We can't leave him out there in the woods all by himself.
Why not? There bears out there?
Well, I would sure hope so.
It's been too long since I tangled with a bear, need to get some practice in.
What? No, nobody is wrestling any bears.
We just need to find Dennis.
Yeah, last time he was in the woods by himself, he was mistaken for a giraffe and got tranquilized by animal control.
LA LA LA, walking in the woods by myself today.
There it is, the escaped giraffe.
Get it. What? I'm not a giraffe.
I'm a real boy. That's exactly what an escaped giraffe would say Yeah, that wasn't pretty all right everyone grab your flashlights, let's go look for Dennis Turning on my flashlight.
Okay everyone now keep an eye out for Dennis Smindy, can you explain what we just saw?
What was that floating light?
Oh, well, like I said, Guy Rauz, it's called an earthquake light.
Earthquake light? I've never heard of that before.
Well, it's a pretty rare geological phenomenon.
Geological phenomenon?
You mean something to do with geology, the study of rocks?
Exactorinos. So you're saying that light that we just saw hovering above the ground had something to do with the rocks beneath our feet?
Yep. And it only happens in very specific circumstances and in very special places.
I mean, why do you think I invited you all out to Summerville, South Carolina?
Well, I assumed it was because you wanted to have a nice, relaxing time outside of the city with all your friends.
Well, that's true, Guy Raz.
But it's only half true.
The other half of that truth is that I wanted to see this earthquake light for myself.
Uh -huh. And this specific location in South Carolina is a place where it happens?
You know it. Oh, hey, look over there.
I think I see him. Yeah, that's him all right.
Hey, feller. Why are you just standing there?
What? No, that's not Dennis, Mr. Fingerling.
That's just a very skinny tree.
Oh. Is that him? Oh, yeah, there he is.
That's him. No, that's just another tree.
Okay, fine. What about that, then?
No, those are all just skinny trees.
They just have the same haircut as Dennis.
Come on, keep moving.
Move. So Mindy, how exactly does this earthquake light occur?
Well, you need two things.
First, you need to be far away from the edge of a tectonic plate.
And tectonic plates are like the giant puzzle pieces that make up the Earth's crust that are deep underground.
Yeah, and when they move or bump into each other, they can cause earthquakes.
Right, so ideally, you want to be as far away as possible from the edges of these puzzle pieces.
Yeah, and then the other thing you need is to be in an area that has lots of magnesium and iron.
Which are both types of metal that can be found in the ground.
Yeah, and Summerville, South Carolina, where these earthquake lights have been spotted, checks both of those boxes.
OK, but how does being far from a tectonic plate and also being in an area with lots of magnesium and iron cause these spooky floating lights?
Well, there are lots of theories, Kai -roz.
I mean, this sort of thing has actually been observed all over the world.
But one theory suggests that when the ground shakes ever so slightly from an earthquake, the iron and magnesium gets bent and squished, and this causes an electrical charge.
Huh, kind of like when you rub two balloons together, it creates a static charge.
Exactly, and this electrical charge can then travel up to the surface of the Earth and create an electrical field that causes the molecules in the air to glow.
The electrical charges from the ground cause the air to glow?
Yeah, sort of like how particles from the sun can excite the air around the North Pole and create the northern lights.
So the glowing orb we just saw was actually some air that was excited by some metal in the ground shaking from a really small earthquake?
You got it. So no ghost?
Nope, it's something even more spectacular than a ghost, Guy Raz.
It's science! Oh, hey, there he is.
I found him. No, you didn't, I did.
No, me. Uh, no, that's not Dennis.
That's just a very old and decrepit sign.
Oh, look, Mindy, behind the sign post. Mindy, Guy Raz?
Is that you? Dennis, we found you!
Don't come any closer!
What's the matter, feller?
You don't recognize old Thomas Fingerling?
How do I know you're not a ghost?
Well, could a ghost do this?
Why? Ow! Ow! Grandma Gee -Gars, stop wrestling me!
Uh... We're not ghosts, Dennis.
Ghosts don't exist. Oh, really?
Then what was that giant floating orb of light I saw back there?
It's a geological phenomenon called earthquake light.
Yeah, and we can tell you all about it on the way back to camp.
Oh, phew. You know what?
I thought it might be an earthquake light.
Didn't I say it was an earthquake light, Reggie?
Yes, I did, too. What was that?
Mindy, I thought you said there weren't any bears in these woods?
Yeah, about that. Bears?
Bears? Maybe we should move a little faster.
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.
Come here, bears. Come here.
Much faster. So basically Dennis, earthquake lightning happens when you're far away from a tectonic and there's lots of magnesium and iron in the ground.
Not right now, Lindy!
