📋 Summary

Introduction: The Return of the Reading Phase

After a long period of a "reading slump" throughout high school, Nicole shares her excitement about returning to her hobby as she heads into her sophomore year of college. Her goal for the summer was to reignite her love for books, and she has successfully read over ten titles so far. This curated list focuses primarily on contemporary romance, though she includes a few historical fiction favorites to round out the selection.

Top Picks: From Malibu to Marriage Camps

  • Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid: This historical fiction novel served as the catalyst for ending Nicole’s reading slump. She praised the "dual timeline" structure and the "unmatched" summer vibes, noting that she finished it in just two days.
  • The Summer of Broken Rules by K.L. Walther: A "cute" young adult romance set in Martha's Vineyard. Nicole highlights the "family bond" and the "traditional game of assassin" as key elements that made this a delightful summer read.
  • Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez: Awarded a perfect "five stars," this story features a unique plot about two people trying to break a curse by dating each other. Nicole applauds Jimenez’s writing style, specifically the "chef’s kiss" male characters, and recommends reading the series (including Part of Your World and Yours Truly) in order.
  • Till Summer Do Us Part by Meghan Quinn: Currently her favorite read of the season, this book features a "fake husband" and "marriage camp" trope. Nicole loved the "banter" between the protagonists and mentioned the helpful inclusion of character illustrations that helped her visualize the story.

Genre Explorations and Tropes

  • Every Summer After by Carly Fortune: Nicole enjoyed the "childhood best friends to lovers" trope and the dual timeline, though she admitted being "low-key annoyed" by the miscommunication trope present in the narrative.
  • The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren: This book tackles "social class and family issues" through a fake marriage arrangement, set against the backdrop of a destination wedding on an Indonesian private island.
  • It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey: Despite being written in the third person—which initially caught the author off guard—Nicole found this "very spicy" small-town romance to be a fun experience.

Mixed Results and Future TBR

Nicole also addressed books that didn't quite resonate with her, specifically Happy Place by Emily Henry and Problematic Summer Romance by Elsie Hazelwood. While she enjoyed the tropes (such as "close proximity" and "fake dating"), she felt she simply didn't connect with these particular stories. Looking forward, she is currently reading 28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand and plans to revisit We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han in anticipation of the upcoming TV series adaptation.

Conclusion

Nicole concludes by emphasizing how much "joy" reading brings back into her life. She invites her audience to share their own recommendations and offers a final note on her book-buying habits, mentioning her frequent trips to Barnes & Noble while contemplating whether to make the switch to a Kindle.
