While natural rubber was effective, the need for a truly resilient, flexible textile led to the invention of spandex (traditionally known by the trade name Lycra) by DuPont chemists in 1959. By forcing a urethane-based polymer through tiny holes, they created a synthetic fiber that could be dyed, washed, and, most importantly, would "snap back" to its original shape. Today, spandex is present in approximately 80% of all clothing purchased by Americans, fundamentally changing the fashion industry.

The Chemistry of 'Snapback'

At the molecular level, rubber is an elastomer, a polymer consisting of long, repeating chains called monomers. In their natural state, these molecules resemble a "coiled mass of snakes." When force is applied, the molecules straighten out, but as soon as the force is released, they return to their coiled arrangement—this is the secret to their elasticity.

However, this resilience is not permanent. The hosts explain that elastic eventually loses its effectiveness due to oxidation, where ozone and UV radiation break the chemical bonds within the material.
