Hi there! Welcome to Thursday and to Radio Headspace.
I'm Dora and I have a confession I'd like to make.
I'm one of those people who loves buying books, but hardly ever gets around to reading them.
My bookshelf is basically a shrine to my ambitious intentions.
But every once in a while, a book seems to find me through some weird synchronicity or happy accident.
And when it does, I dive in headfirst.
One of those books was Wake Up to Your Life by Buddhist teacher Ken McCloud.
If you ever come across a book that simplifies complex teachings and feels like it's speaking directly to you, then you'll know why I couldn't put this book down.
There's a chapter in the book that really struck me.
Ken talks about the momentum of practice and he compares it to the journey of water and nature, from the wild rushing energy of a waterfall to the calm, stillness of a lake.
And that imagery captured something so important about how we can engage with our meditation practice.
And it's what I want to share about in today's episode.
So for many people, they find that the first minutes of meditation are discouraging because their thoughts can feel chaotic and overwhelming, as if their mind was a rushing river.
But what Ken described in his book is this turbulence is completely natural and to be expected.
The mind needs time to settle from the busyness of the day.
It's not a sign that you can't meditate, but rather a part of the process.
The mind needs time to unwind before it finds stillness, which is why longer meditations often allow us to fully experience mindfulness.
If we judge the practice based on those initial moments of mental clutter, we might miss out on the clarity that follows.
There's a Zen Buddhist story of a Zen student going to a temple and asking his Master how long it will take for him to gain enlightenment.
Ten years, replied the Zen Master.
Well, what if I work really hard and double my efforts, the student asked.
Twenty years, replies the Master.
And the story reminds me of how when I first started to meditate, I try really hard to focus as soon as I sat down.
I tried to bypass the first stage of the mind that I just shared about.
I wanted to get straight to peacefulness and tranquility.
But as some of you may know, the more you try to force meditation to happen, or force presence to arise, the more it leaves you.
I've learned over time that there isn't a good or bad way to show up in meditation.
It's really about being aware and present to whatever is going on.
So when we sit in meditation, we're bringing everything that we've experienced that day, whether it's the frustration of a tense conversation, the joy of a shared moment, or the confusion from something unresolved.
All of that energy arrives with us and is a part of the process too.
A helpful way to settle into your practice knowing that the rapids the mind might be waiting, is to pause and check in with yourself first.
Notice how you feel physically, take stock of your mood, and observe the quality of your thoughts.
This simple act of acknowledgment creates space for kindness and grace, allowing you to meet your mind exactly as it is, without expectation or judgment.
From there, a few deep breaths can help you ease into stillness and focus as you begin.
If you feel ready, you can also try increasing the length of your meditation time too.
And don't worry, tomorrow we'll explore the science behind a busy mind, giving you a deeper understanding of why it loves to wander.
But until then, take good care of yourself, and I'll see you soon.
