Hi everyone, it's Keesonga.
Just a reminder that you can listen to all of our podcasts ad -free on the Headspace app.
Hi friends, it's Rosie here.
Welcome to Radio Headspace and to Tuesday.
Recently I found myself in a difficult situation with a friend.
We had been friends for years, sharing countless memories and experiences.
But when the topic of politics came up, we realized just how different our views had become as of the last few years.
It was challenging to say the least.
The tension and discomfort were palpable and for a moment, I feared it might damage our relationship.
So let's talk about loving kindness in this situation.
When we encounter deep disagreements, especially with those we care about, it's easy to let frustration, anger, or hurt take over.
But loving kindness invites us to approach these moments with compassion and understanding rather than judgment.
It's not about changing someone's mind or winning an argument.
It's about maintaining a connection rooted in respect and love, even when we don't see eye -to -eye.
Back to the situation with my friend.
In one of our conversations, we began discussing a highly charged political issue.
The debate quickly escalated and emotions ran high.
We both felt passionately about our perspectives and it seemed like we were at an impasse.
I want to be clear here.
I teach mindfulness and meditation and have been doing so for close to 15 years.
And when I say it escalated, boy, did it.
The moment we began teetering on personal attacks, we knew we needed to take a beat.
It was a moment of truth for our friendship.
That night, I decided to do a loving kindness meditation, focusing specifically on my friend.
I repeated the phrases, may you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be safe, may you live with ease.
I visualized her smiling face and tried to let go of my frustration and judgment.
Instead of seeing her as someone with opposing views, I saw her as my dear friend who had been there for me through thick and thin, a true ride or die.
It wasn't easy as I would occasionally get flashes of her rallying with her other friends, those particular friends telling her how wrong I was and how I just don't get it.
I get it. I get a lot of things.
And again, other thoughts, other flashes in which I won the debate, visualizing her apologizing to me and acknowledging my views.
That's not the point I would say to myself while seated on my cushion.
These thoughts often would take me out of my practice and I would return to non -attached sending well wishes.
After a few days, the intensity of my feelings began to lessen.
Sometimes that's the best we can achieve, right?
Just a little less charge, and that's okay.
The next time we spoke, the tension had eased.
We still had our differences, but there was a newfound respect and understanding between us.
Over the years, this practice has allowed me to approach not just this conversation, but all conversations I have with compassion and openness.
For me, recognizing that my friendship with this person was more important than our differing opinions.
If you'll indulge me, I'd like to guide you through a practice right now.
You can do this wherever you are in this moment.
Let's begin by taking a big, deep breath.
Let's start by directing kindness towards ourselves.
Silently or out loud repeat the following phrases.
May I be happy? May I be healthy?
May I be safe? May I live with ease?
Feeling the gentle warmth of these wishes in your heart.
Now, think of a loved one and extend the same wishes to them.
May you be happy? May you be healthy?
May you be safe? May you live with ease?
Next, think of an acquaintance or someone you interact with regularly.
May you be happy? May you be healthy?
May you be safe? May you live with ease?
And finally, think of someone you find challenging or have had conflicts with.
May you be happy? May you be healthy?
May you be safe? May you live with ease?
Recognize their humanity and your shared connection.
If you happen to be struggling right now, here are some ways you can practice loving kindness today.
Number one, start with easy targets.
Begin by sending loving kindness to people you care about and have positive feelings towards.
This builds a strong foundation for extending it to others.
Number two, include acquaintances.
Gradually include people you know but aren't particularly close to, like colleagues or neighbors.
This broadens your circle of compassion.
Number three, challenge yourself but do so gently.
When you're ready, extend loving kindness to those you find difficult.
This can be transformative, helping you to see them in a new light and fostering forgiveness and understanding.
But do so gently with care and compassion towards yourself.
As we wrap up today's episode, I encourage you to explore the practice of loving kindness.
