  • Public Awareness: Intensive campaigns were launched to educate the community about symptoms and tick dangers, utilizing posters and community outreach.
  • Contact Tracing: Much like pandemic protocols, health teams followed up on confirmed cases to check both family members and pets for signs of infection.
  • Tick Control: The team deployed "tick traps" baited with dry ice to monitor populations and fitted dogs with specialized collars that prevent tick attachment for up to eight months.
  • Environmental Intervention: Animal control officers sprayed acaricides, a pesticide designed to kill ticks and mites, around the base of homes to eliminate residual threats.

Sustaining Success Through Community Trust

Despite the labor-intensive nature of these efforts, the tribe has achieved a significant milestone: zero deaths from RMSF in five years. This success is largely attributed to the dedication of local leaders like Hardy Bendel and his small field team, who serve as "nodes of trust" within the community. By conducting door-to-door visits and building strong relationships, they have effectively reduced tick populations in target areas.

A Global Perspective and Ongoing Vigilance

While the situation on the San Carlos Apache lands is a success story, the threat remains global. In northern Mexico, the disease is currently fueling a surging epidemic, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations living in poverty. Furthermore, the risk persists for travelers; the CDC issued warnings in 2023 following fatal cases in California linked to travel in Northwest Mexico. As there is currently no vaccine for either humans or dogs, public health experts emphasize that constant vigilance and long-term commitment are required to keep the disease at bay.
