Do you ever feel like you're using the same words in English all of the time?
Like, yes, yes. No, I don't know. No, I'm tired.
In today's lesson, I'm going to expand your vocabulary using yes, no and I'm tired into more phrases that you can use to mean these same things, but you can have more expressive, advanced and colorful language.
Make sure to visit englishwithkayla.com.
Now let's get started with this lesson. We're going to start with some phrases that you can use to mean yes.
But again, these are more expressive and can be used in different contexts.
So if somebody is making plans and they want to know if you want to do it with them, or if you're going to say yes, You can say I'm down.
I'm down. Okay, I'm down. This comes off really natural and really casual.
Now, if you want to ask someone if they want to do something with you, could say, would you be down to go hiking this weekend?
So down means yes or okay in English. If you want to be more friendly and enthusiastic when you're saying yes, especially in a new friendship or a new relationship, you could say, for sure.
Do you want to go hiking with me this weekend?
For sure. This just shows that you are really excited about the opportunity to do something.
Yeah, for sure. For sure. If you want to agree with someone, Instead of just saying, yes, I agree, you can use the word totally.
This is so American. Totally American. So when you say totally, you are agreeing with what someone just said Or if they ask you if you want to do something, you can say totally.
It just means you 100% agree with the plan and want to say yes.
Totally. Someone might say, that movie was so hilarious.
You can just respond by saying, totally.
Or if someone says, hmm, Chinese food sounds really good tonight. say totally.
This just means you really agree with them.
Another really friendly way to say yes or agree to something is by saying, you bet.
This is a bit more old-fashioned, but I still use this all of the time.
If someone says, oh, thank you so much for your help, I'll say, you bet.
It just means like, of course, yes, you bet.
You bet. Another really great phrase that native speakers use all the time is no doubt about it.
No doubt about it. This just means almost the same as totally... or I agree or very confident about something if you say no doubt about it.
I think we're gonna win the game tonight.
No doubt about it. Or someone might say, do you think I can get this job?
Might say confidently, no doubt about it.
This means yes, but it's very confident in your prediction.
No doubt about it. Now, how do you say no without just saying no, especially if you're the type of person that doesn't want to be rude.
If someone offers you something and you just don't want it, Either it doesn't look good or just you don't need it right now.
You can say, oh, I'm good, thanks. Sometimes if you go to somebody's house and they offer you a beverage, a drink, and you're really just not thirsty or you just don't want any, you can say, oh, I'm good, thanks.
It shows you appreciate the offer, but...
You're good. You don't need anything. I'm good, thanks.
One way that I say no to going to outings or events, if I just am not in the mood or Like it just doesn't work with my schedule or I'm just kind of tired.
I'll say, I'll pass. Maybe your friends after work say, do you want to go to karaoke with us tonight?
I'll pass. Thank you though. It just means, you know, This is not going to work out for me right now.
And it's seen as a polite way to decline something and say no.
I think I'll pass. Another polite way you can say you don't really like to do a type of thing or something is you can say, it's not really my thing.
Someone might say, do you want to go skydiving with us?
You might say, ah, not really my thing. No, no thanks.
So it's just gentler rather than saying no or I don't like that.
Not really my thing, just means it's not your type of activity.
It is not your hobby, not something that you think you would enjoy doing.
And again, it's seen as a polite thing to say if you want to say no to something.
It's not really my thing. A fun phrase that you can mix into your vocabulary to say, that you don't want to do something, especially when it comes to doing something with a group of people You say, I think I'll sit this one out.
I think of this Literally, if you are at a wedding or some kind of party and everyone's dancing and and a song comes on that you just don't really want to dance to, you might say i'm gonna go sit this one out guys this means i'm gonna take a break i'm going to pass on this song Again, it's a soft, gentle refusal.
Someone might be saying, hey, we're all gonna go get drinks after work.
You'll say, oh, I'm so tired. I think I got to sit this one out.
This just means that next time, maybe. but today I'm refusing the invitation.
And then our really great way if you want to say that you want to hang out with the person or do whatever they want to do with you. but it just doesn't work with your schedule or, you know, again, you're tired or something, you can say maybe another time.
Do you want to go get dinner tonight? Maybe another time.
I'm so tired. This leaves the door open for another invitation.
It makes a person feel like they can invite you again and say no.
Sorry guys, maybe another time. I love teaching these next five phrases to say that you're tired because They're just so expressive and they're just such fun idioms to use and learn in English.
So instead of saying you're tired, you can say I'm wiped out.
I'm wiped out. I'm going to go home. This just means you're really, really tired.
You're about to go to sleep. I'm wiped out.
If you are at work or you're exercising or something, And you're so tired, but you're trying to keep going.
If you want to tell someone that, use this idiom.
You say... I'm running on fumes, and this is the same idea of a car having no gasoline to power the engine.
It's barely having anything to fuel it. It's barely going but it's still trying.
I'm running on fumes. I'm barely going. I'm running on fumes.
I always think it's super rude to say you look tired to people because...
It implies that they don't look very energized or good, so I avoid saying that to people.
But if somebody does, you can just respond by, yeah, I could use a nap.
Gosh, I could use a nap. This just means you're tired and if you had a nap, you might feel refreshed.
If someone has gone through something very emotional or... maybe they've just had a very tiring day in general.
They can use the phrase, I'm drained. I'm totally drained right now.
You can be drained emotionally or you can just be drained and be physically exhausted.
I'm drained. And then another phrase that you can use just to say that you are tired of doing the same thing, maybe it comes to work or school here.
You could say, I am so burnt out. I'm so burnt out.
I can't wait for the end of the semester. or I'm so burned out I can't wait till the end of the day on Friday. just means you're exhausted and you just don't have any mental energy left.
Well, I flunked out because I burnt out.
