📋 Summary

The Song of the Horse: A Mongolian Folktale of Eternal Connection

The Shepherd and the Foal

In the harsh, frigid countryside of Mongolia, a young shepherd named Suho lived a modest life with his grandmother. Despite their poverty, Suho harbored a profound passion for music, often singing to his sheep as he herded them. His life changed forever when he discovered a "tiny white newborn foal" abandoned in a patch of shrubs. Feeling a kinship with the lonely creature, Suho took the foal home. With his grandmother’s blessing, he nurtured the horse until it grew into a "magnificent creature" with "gleaming white mane and tail" that sparkled like the winter snow. Their bond became inseparable; the horse assisted in herding and even harmonized with Suho’s songs, acting as a true companion.

The Governor’s Greed and the Great Race

When a severe winter decimated their flock, leaving Suho and his grandmother in financial despair, they sought a solution. Hearing of a "great horse race" hosted by the local governor, where the winner would receive a "massive chest full of gold coins," Suho saw a chance to secure their future and finally buy a musical instrument. Despite appearing in "threadbare work clothes" against riders dressed to the nines, Suho and his horse dominated the competition. They crossed the finish line first, earning the crowd's "deafening roar." However, the governor, blinded by vanity and elitism, mocked Suho for being a "ragamuffin" and refused to award the prize. When Suho stood his ground, the governor cruelly seized the horse, forcing the shepherd away and leaving him heartbroken.

The Horse’s Return and the Final Farewell

The governor’s attempt to tame the horse failed miserably; the proud animal "reared up" and threw him to the ground before fleeing back toward the countryside. With the help of the governor’s kind-hearted daughter, Gariel, who opened the city gates, the horse escaped the palace. Though the horse miraculously found its way back to Suho, it was physically spent from its journey. Despite Suho’s devoted care and singing, the horse passed away during the night.

The Birth of the Morin Khuur

In his grief, Suho experienced a vision where his loyal friend instructed him on how to keep their bond alive forever. The horse told him to use its body to create a "fiddle and bow." Following these instructions, Suho crafted an instrument using the horse's hair for strings and carving a "horse's head" at the top. This creation became the Morin Khuur—the Mongolian horsehead fiddle. Today, the instrument is "revered" across Mongolia, serving as a symbol of peace and happiness. The story remains a poignant testament to how a young shepherd’s kindness and love for music transformed a tragic loss into a cultural legacy that keeps his friend in his heart forever.
