Hey there, Smarty Pants.
Welcome back to another episode of Smarty Q, where I, your trusty narrator, answer amazing questions sent in by you.
My incredible Smarty Pants.
And we have a great batch today.
So let's get started, or should I say, smarted.
Question one comes from Olivia, who wants to know, how does a whoopee cushion work?
Oh, wow.
Of course you asked who smarted that question.
Well, Olivia, as you know, a whoopee cushion is a classic prank toy that works using air pressure and sound vibrations, the same physics that make actual farts.
Here's what happens.
When you blow it up, you're filling a flat rubber balloon with air.
Inside, there's a small flap or opening near one edge.
When someone sits down on it, the air gets quickly pushed out that little hole.
As the air rushes out, it vibrates, the rubber opening creating a sound that sounds exactly like well a fart.
The size of the cushion, the shape of the opening, and the speed of the air all affect the sound.
Think of a whoopee cushion kind of like a musical instrument that uses physics to make everyone laugh.
Okay, question two.
Sam, a Spotify listener, asks, how have bald cats adapted?
Huh, what an interesting question.
Bald cats like the sphinx breed might look very different, but they're adapted in clever ways to live without fur.
Because they don't have thick coats, bald cats have faster metabolisms to help them stay warm.
That means they often eat more food than furry cats.
Their skin produces oils to protect and moisturize them, but since there's no fur to absorb that oil, bald cats need regular baths to stay clean.
They also love warm spots, sunbeams, blankets, or even your lap because they lose heat more easily.
Their whiskers, strong muscles, and keen senses make up for what they lack in fluff.
So while they look hairless, bald cats are actually perfectly adapted for indoor life, with a little human help.
Okay, on to question three.
An unknown Spotify smarty pants asks, how do soldiers take breaks?
What a thoughtful question.
Being a soldier is tough work and yes, soldiers do take breaks, but it depends on where they are and what they're doing.
When soldiers are deployed, which means away on missions, rest time is carefully scheduled so that part of the group can sleep, eat or relax, while others keep watch or continue their duties.
Even in combat zones, they have rotations for meals, hygiene and short naps when it's safe.
When they're back at base or not on active duty, soldiers have days off, exercise time, family calls and activities like reading or sports to stay healthy and focused.
The goal is to balance discipline and recovery, because even the strongest soldiers need rest to stay alert and effective.

Okay, question four.
Smarty Pants Emmeline asks, do fish ever get thirsty?
It might surprise you that the answer depends on what kind of fish we're talking about.
Fish don't drink water the way humans do, but their bodies constantly interact with it.
Saltwater fish live in a very salty environment, so their bodies are always losing water to the ocean.
To stay hydrated.
They actually drink seawater and then use their gills and kidneys to remove the extra salt.
Freshwater fish, on the other hand, live in water that's less salty than their bodies, so water keeps flowing into them naturally, through their gills and skin.
They don't drink.
Instead, they get rid of the extra water by making lots of diluted pee.
So do fish get thirsty?
Not really.
They're constantly balancing water and salt without even thinking about it.
And finally, question five.
Charlie, a Spotify commenter, asks, why is music called music?
Hmm.
The word music comes from the ancient Greek word musike, which means the art of the muses.
The muses were mythical Greek goddesses who inspired creativity in arts, poetry, and song.
Over time the word spread through Latin as musica and Old French musique, until it reached English as music.
So when you say music, you're really using a word that goes back thousands of years, connecting today's songs to the ancient idea of art inspired by the gods.
