📋 Summary

The Power of Unseen Kindness

In this special bonus episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear shares a Hawaiian folktale centered on Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. The story serves as a poignant reminder of the magic that unfolds when we extend kindness to strangers. Pele, known for her ability to disguise herself as a human, wanders through Hawaiian villages to test the character of those she encounters.

The Contrast of Hospitality

The narrative highlights a stark contrast between two households. Pele first approaches a wealthy couple who possess an abundance of resources, including "bowls of juicy mango, platters of fresh fish, and an enormous pot of the sticky pudding-like dish called poi." Despite their wealth, the woman selfishly denies the disguised goddess even a single bite, claiming they have "no food to spare."

Conversely, Pele visits a humble hut where a father and his young son reside. Despite their meager circumstances—possessing only a "dry and dusty garden" with "scrappy and wilted taro plants"—they immediately invite the stranger in. The son, embodying pure generosity, offers his own portion of poi to Pele, saying, "Daddy and I always share." This act of selflessness, performed without hesitation, stands in direct opposition to the greed displayed by the wealthy couple.

The Harvest of Good Deeds

As a direct consequence of their kindness, the father and son are rewarded by the goddess. Upon checking their garden the following morning, they discover it has been transformed, "bursting with row after row of strong and hardy taro plants." The soil, previously dry and dusty, had become "dark and rich" volcanic soil, teeming with the minerals and nutrients necessary for plants to thrive. The story concludes with a powerful moral: if you "plant seeds of kindness, you should harvest the rewards."

Encouraging Compassion Through 'Kindness Bingo'

To bridge the gap between the story and real-world action, the episode introduces an engaging activity called "Kindness Bingo." Listeners are encouraged to create a board with nine squares, each detailing a small act of kindness—such as "sending a card to a friend" or "helping a grown-up in your home clean up." This initiative aims to cultivate a habit of generosity in young listeners, emphasizing that acts of kindness, no matter how small, are meaningful. By turning compassion into a tangible, rewarding game, the podcast reinforces the idea that the "possibilities are endless" when it comes to being kind to others.
