📋 Summary

The Wave of Disappearances in the Lewis-Clark Valley

In the fall of 1982, the Lewis-Clark Valley—a region spanning Washington, Idaho, and Oregon—was gripped by a series of unsettling disappearances. Within a span of just three weeks, four individuals vanished, leading authorities to feel they were "underwater with cases." The victims included two-year-old Ricky Barnett, who vanished from a farm; 21-year-old Christina Nelson and her 18-year-old stepsister, Jacqueline “Brandy” Miller; and 35-year-old Steven Parasol. While some cases, such as that of Jennifer Vincent, were eventually resolved as accidents, the disappearances of Christina, Brandy, and Steven remained shrouded in mystery, creating an atmosphere where residents felt they were being "hunted by this faceless, nameless boogeyman."

The "Civic Theater Three" and the Lance Voss Connection

Investigators soon identified a haunting connection between the three missing adults: they all had ties to the Lewiston Civic Theater. Christina had worked there, and Steven was a dedicated volunteer who was last seen at the theater on the night he vanished. When the skeletal remains of Christina and Brandy were discovered in 1984, the pathologist determined they had been strangled. Underneath their bodies lay lengths of "clothesline cord," a detail that piqued investigators' interest because it resembled the specific rigging equipment used at the theater.

Suspicion quickly fell upon Lance Voss, a man who was present at the theater on the night Steven disappeared. Voss provided inconsistent accounts of his whereabouts, claiming at various times that he was rigging curtains, fell through a ceiling, or was watching a movie at a nearby pizzeria. His story failed to align with known timelines, and his proximity to the victims—both in space and time—made him a primary person of interest for law enforcement.

A History of Red Flags

Further investigation into Lance Voss revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior spanning decades. In 1963, a 15-year-old Voss was a camp counselor for eight-year-old Diane Taylor, who was brutally murdered in Chicago. Later, in 1972, after 17-year-old Antoinette Anino was found dead in the ocean, Voss was apprehended breaking into the mortuary where her body was held, equipped with a "flashlight, a hunting knife, and a camera." These historical incidents, combined with his connection to the death of an affair partner, Claudette Boliva, in 1987, paint a picture of a man consistently present near tragedy.

The Ongoing Pursuit of Justice

Despite the circumstantial evidence, the lack of a body for Steven Parasol makes it difficult for prosecutors to build a "slam dunk" case. Detective Jackie Nichols, who has been instrumental in keeping these cold cases alive, continues to push for DNA testing on recovered items, such as the cords found with the victims. While the case of Kristen David—a young woman found dismembered in the Snake River in 1981—remains an outlier due to a different modus operandi, the community and investigators remain vigilant. The hope is that by bringing these stories to light, the public will provide the missing information necessary to hold the true perpetrator accountable, finally closing the dark chapter of the Lewis-Clark Valley disappearances.
