Let's start with simple sentences.
A simple sentence contains one independent clause.
That's a subject followed by a verb or verb phrase.
It expresses a single idea.
For example, I always lock the door.
My sister set the table.
We might go see a movie.
They went swimming.
So the subjects are I, my sister, we, and they, and the verbs are lock, set, go, and went.
Each simple sentence has one subject and one verb.
A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by a linking word, like and, but, or, so, yet, and however.
Each independent clause could be a sentence by itself, but we connect them with a linking word. For example, I always lock the door so nobody can get in.
My sister set the table, and my brother cleaned the kitchen.
We might go see a movie.
Or, we might go dancing.
They went swimming, but they didn't stay in the water very long.
So, you can see that in the first sentence we have two independent clauses.
I always lock the door.
Nobody can get in. Each one of those has a subject and a verb, and they are linked by the word, so.
It's the same for the other examples.
Two independent clauses.
Each one could be a sentence by itself, and they are connected by that linking word. Now let's look at complex sentences.
A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
A dependent clause cannot be a complete sentence by itself.
For example, I always lock the door as I leave the house.
While I was cooking dinner, my sister set the table.
If we can get a babysitter tomorrow night, we might go see a movie.
They didn't stay in the water for long because it was very cold.
Common words that start dependent clauses include after, before, when, while, once, until, as soon as, as long as, though, although, even though, because, if, whenever, as, as if and just as.
Finally, a compound complex sentence.
sentence. This type of sentence contains three or more clauses, two independent and at least one dependent clause.
Let's look at some examples.
The dependent clauses are in green.
Again, those are the ones that cannot be a sentence by themselves.
One independent clause is in blue, one is in purple, and the linking word is in red.
I always lock the door as I leave the house, so nobody can get in.
While I was cooking dinner, my sister set the table, and my brother cleaned the kitchen.
If we can get a babysitter tomorrow night, we might go see a movie, or we might go dancing.
They went swimming, but they didn't stay in the water for long because it was very cold.
Now let's look at a single example and transform it from simple to compound to complex to compound complex. Simple sentence, She stayed in bed all day.
Compound sentence, She stayed in bed all day, but she still managed to read a book.
Complex sentence, She stayed in bed all day, since she wasn't feeling well.
Compound complex sentence, She stayed in bed all day, since she wasn't feeling well, but she still managed to read a book.
