Hi and welcome to the Espresso English Podcast, where you can improve your English in just a few minutes a day.
My name is Shana, and I'm the teacher at Espresso English.
Make sure to visit the website EspressoEnglishnet, where you can get online courses and e-books that will help you learn English even faster.
Let's get started with today's lesson.
It's for sell or it's for sale?
Which one is correct?
Today I will clearly explain the difference between sell, sale and sold, so you will never mix them up again.
And speaking of sales, our Black Friday sale is coming up in just a few days.
All our courses and ebooks will be discounted and it's your chance to get excellent English lessons for the best price available all year.
Download our Black Friday catalog by clicking on the link in the video description, so that you can make your wish list and get ready to take advantage of the sale as soon as it starts.
Okay, let me clear up sale versus sell versus sold.
Sale is a noun, sell is a verb in the simple present and sold is the simple past and past participle form of sell.
Let's look at some examples.
Starting with examples of sale, that's the noun.
There's a big sale at my favorite store.
We say there's a big sale, not a big sell.
The bookstore is having a Christmas sale.
Everything is 20% off.
The sales of our new product are slowly increasing.
Espresso English always has an amazing Black Friday sale.
Now let's see some examples of sell, the verb.
I'm going to sell my car and buy a new one.
We say I'm going to sell, not I'm going to sail.
She's selling bottles of water at the football game.
Are you planning to sell your house anytime soon?
We're selling our children's baby clothes now that they've outgrown them.
And finally, some examples of sold.
Again, this is the simple past and past participle form of sell.
Yesterday i sold all of my old college textbooks on the internet.
We say yesterday i sold, not yesterday i sailed, or yesterday i sold.
My kids set up a lemonade stand but they haven't sold any yet.
He was named salesperson of the year because he sold the most products.
They've sold almost all their possessions and are now traveling full time.
So back to the question at the beginning of this video for sell, for sale, for sell does not exist.
The correct phrase is for sale, meaning something is available to buy.
There are lots of vegetables for sale at the farmers market.
Are those flowers for sale or are they just decorations?
Now, how about for sale and on sale?
If something is for sale, it simply means it is available to buy, but if something is on sale, that means the price is discounted.
For example, this watch is normally $100, but it's on sale for $70.
All the summer stuff goes on sale in May.
You can find some great deals.
Espresso English courses are always for sale, meaning they're available to buy, but they all go on sale with a discounted price during Black Friday.
Again, click on the link in the description to download the course catalog and choose which ones you want to get when they go on sale.
Let's finish this lesson by practicing the pronunciation of sell and sail, since some English learners have trouble differentiating the sound.
Sell rhymes with tell, bell, and well.
Sail rhymes with fail, pale, and nail.
Repeat after me ale sell, sale.
Now you know when to use sell vs sale vs sold, as well as the expressions for sale and on sale, meaning available to buy at a discounted price.
