By consuming phytoplankton and other organisms at the surface, they ingest carbon and transport it down to the mesopelagic zone. When these creatures expel waste—referred to as "poo" and "marine snow"—or die at depth, they effectively sequester that carbon away from the atmosphere. Climate change is increasingly threatening the stability of the twilight zone. As global waters warm, oxygen levels are declining, leading to the expansion of low-oxygen pockets. This phenomenon, known as shoaling, forces specialized organisms to the margins of their habitat. Bolin describes this as a form of "habitat loss," akin to spreading desert conditions where essential resources—in this case, oxygen—are no longer available to support life.
