Huberman provides evidence-based protocols to modulate these pathways:

  • For Divergent Thinking (Open Monitoring): Practice "Open Monitoring Meditation" for 10–30 minutes, where one sits motionless with eyes closed and observes thoughts without judgment. This practice has been shown to increase dopamine in the nigrostriatal pathway by up to 65%. Physical movement that does not require intense sensory focus—such as pacing or running—also facilitates this "pseudo-random walk" of thought.
  • For Convergent Thinking (Focused Attention): Utilize "Focused Attention Meditation," where focus is directed toward a single point (breath, tone, or visual target). This enhances the ability to parse and pressure-test ideas.

By establishing a novel set of rules for a "world," adopting the specific motivations of a character different from oneself, and forcing interactions between those characters, one can reawaken the boundless imaginative capacity typically seen in childhood. This structured narrative approach provides a framework to move beyond one's own ego and autobiographical constraints, allowing for truly novel and fundamental insights.

I'm Andrew Huberman, and I'm a professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at Stanford School of Medicine.
Today, we are discussing creativity. Creativity is a topic that to many people is very abstract.
That is, we know when something seems creative, Some of us know people who are creative or perhaps are creative, and yet the ability to be creative resides in everybody.
And we know that because the neural circuits that underlie creativity have been somewhat defined and the steps and processes within the brain and body that lead to creativity are well known.
That said, most people don't know how to access creativity.
