📋 Summary

The Peacock Princess: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, and Redemption

Introduction: A Prince's Quest for True Love

The story centers on Shao Shu Tun, a handsome and powerful prince of the Dai people. Despite his status and the constant adoration from local women who proclaim, "I can cook, clean, dance and sing," Shao Shu Tun longs for a deeper connection. He famously declares, "I want to marry for love," rejecting the superficial interest of his subjects. Seeking a partner, he turns to his friend, a hunter, who suggests a daring plan: to capture the heart of Lan Wu Luana, the most beautiful of seven peacock maidens who visit Lansina Lake.

The Meeting and the Marriage

Following the hunter's advice, the prince waits by the lake. As the maidens arrive, he is "transfixed by their beauty and exquisite dancing." By borrowing Lan Wu Luana’s peacock cloak, he forces her to stay and converse with him. Their connection is immediate; they discover they share many common interests, particularly regarding food. Their budding romance leads to a marriage proposal, which she accepts with "little hesitation." Their union is celebrated with a grand ceremony, but their happiness is short-lived.

The Wizard’s Curse and the Trial of the Princess

An "evil wizard," jealous of their joy, casts a series of dark spells. He orchestrates a lightning storm to disrupt the wedding, triggers a war to draw the prince away, and manipulates the King into believing the princess is a "monster" who has brought "bad luck to the kingdom." The King, under the wizard's influence, orders her execution. In a final act of grace, the princess is granted her wish to wear her cloak one last time. She performs the "peacock dance" with such grace that she is able to escape, flying back to the safety of the peacock kingdom.

The Prince’s Journey to Redemption

Upon returning from the war, the prince discovers the wizard's treachery. He engages in a fierce battle, eventually breaking the spell. Filled with remorse, the King assists the prince in his quest to reunite with his wife. Armed with three magical golden arrows, the prince embarks on a perilous journey. He uses the first arrow to shatter massive rocks blocking his path to the peacock land.

The Final Test and Victory

At the peacock palace, the prince must prove his worth to the King. He faces a challenge: identifying his wife among the seven maidens hidden behind a curtain, with only their shadows visible. Relying on his intuition and love, he fires the second arrow to snuff out the candle on her head, successfully proving his devotion.

However, the evil wizard returns one last time to prevent their happiness. The prince uses his final magic arrow to strike the wizard, who transforms into a "vulture" and flees, screaming. With the antagonist defeated, the prince and the Peacock Princess are finally able to live "happily ever after," marking the conclusion of this classic Dai folktale.
