📋 Summary

The Legend of Niu Lang and Zhi Nu: A Celestial Tale of Love and Separation

In the vast tapestry of Chinese folklore, few stories are as poignant and enduring as the tale of the Cowherd and the Weaver Fairy. This narrative, which explains the origin of the stars Altair and Vega, serves as the foundation for the Qixi Festival—a day dedicated to lovers across China. The story begins with a humble cowherd named Niu Lang, whose life was marred by tragedy and the cruelty of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Ma.

The Cowherd and the Divine Companion

Niu Lang’s life was defined by labor and hardship. After the death of his parents, he was cast aside by his brother and the malicious Mrs. Ma, eventually finding himself forced to sleep in a barn. The turning point of his life occurred when he was tasked with presenting ten oxen to his sister-in-law. Despite his best efforts, he could only count nine. Despairing on a hillside, he was approached by an old man who directed him to a wounded ox. Niu Lang’s compassion led him to heal the animal, who eventually revealed himself to be an "ox god." This divine bond provided Niu Lang with not only a companion but also the catalyst for his fated meeting with the weaver fairy, Zhi Nu, the daughter of the King and Queen of Heaven.

A Forbidden Union

While bathing in the river, Zhi Nu was startled by Niu Lang and his bovine friend. Despite the initial shock, the two formed an instant connection. The ox god, acting as a matchmaker, encouraged Niu Lang to pursue a life with her. As the podcast notes, the pair were "made for each other," and despite Zhi Nu’s warning that her celestial parents would not approve, they married and lived in happiness, eventually raising two children. Their domestic bliss, however, was short-lived as the divine authorities discovered the union of a fairy and a mortal.

The Creation of the Heavenly River

Upon learning of the marriage, the Queen of Heaven forcibly separated the couple, whisking Zhi Nu back to the celestial realm. Niu Lang was devastated, but his companion, the ox god, offered a final act of devotion. Before passing away, the ox instructed Niu Lang to turn his hide into a pair of shoes and a cloak. These magical items allowed Niu Lang to fly toward the heavens in pursuit of his wife.

Just as the lovers were about to reunite, the Queen of Heaven intervened again. She used her hairpin to scratch a line across the sky, creating the "Milky Way," also known as the "Heavenly River" or "Tianhe." This silver barrier trapped Niu Lang on one side and Zhi Nu on the other. Their sorrow was so immense that it triggered forty days and nights of rain on Earth.

The Magpie Bridge and the Qixi Legacy

Moved by the couple’s "clear and honest love," the magpies of the world orchestrated a miracle. Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, they gather to form a bridge across the Milky Way, allowing Niu Lang and Zhi Nu to reunite with their children for a single day. This annual event has cemented the stars Altair and Vega as symbols of eternal longing. As the story concludes, it serves as a reminder of the origins of the "Double Seven" festival, celebrating the endurance of love in the face of divine separation.
