📋 Summary

Redefining the Runner's Approach to Strength

In this episode of the Strength Running Podcast, host Coach Jason Fitzgerald sits down with Elizabeth "Corky" Corkum, a 2:58 marathoner and certified running coach, to discuss her unconventional training philosophy. Unlike many distance runners who treat strength training as a secondary or minimal activity, Corkum integrates heavy, consistent weightlifting into her routine five days a week. This approach has proven instrumental in her success, particularly in building physical resilience and recovering from setbacks.

The Philosophy of Consistency over Intensity

Corkum emphasizes that her strength training is not about "hero workouts" or hitting max PRs in the gym every day. Instead, she prioritizes consistency and form. "I'm going to be at 90% today," she notes, explaining that avoiding chronic soreness is key to maintaining high weekly running mileage. By focusing on 3–4 sets of 6–10 repetitions, she ensures her body remains robust without compromising her ability to hit splits during speed workouts. She highlights that the fear of being too sore to run is often "overblown" if one starts where they are and progresses incrementally.

Navigating Setbacks and Strategic Decision-Making

Corkum’s journey has not been without obstacles. She candidly discusses the mental and physical challenges of navigating injuries, including a labral tear and bursitis, which forced her to withdraw from the Boston Marathon. Her decision to forgo the race, despite her deep emotional attachment to it, serves as a powerful lesson in long-term athlete health. "There’s going to be more Bostons... you only have one body ultimately protecting that," she reflects. This wisdom, gained from past experiences with overtraining, allowed her to recover fully and eventually secure her long-sought sub-three-hour marathon goal at the Mount Charleston Marathon.

Conquering the Downhill Marathon

The Mount Charleston Marathon presented unique challenges, including 5,000 feet of net downhill and high altitude. Corkum’s preparation for this race was atypical, but her foundation in strength training provided the necessary "protective effect" against the intense eccentric contractions involved in downhill running. Despite mid-race complications—including a "sore stomach" and a blood blister that required on-course "surgery" with a safety pin—she maintained her composure. She advises runners not to "bank time" early in a race, noting that the marathon is a test of patience where controlled efforts pay off in the final miles.

The Power of a Supportive Environment

Beyond training metrics, Corkum highlights the importance of creating an environment that fosters habit formation. Her home gym, complete with a beer fridge and unique lighting, removes the friction of travel and social intimidation often found in commercial gyms. By making the training space enjoyable, she ensures she shows up consistently. "If you want to be in the space that you're training, the training is going to happen," she asserts.

Final Advice for Aspiring Runners

Corkum concludes by urging runners to embrace patience and trust the process. "We can't fast track adaptation without major potential for injury risk," she warns. She encourages athletes to find joy in the daily grind of training rather than viewing it solely as a means to an end. For Corkum, the marathon is the "bonus," but the true reward lies in the resilience and strength developed through years of patient, consistent, and unconventional hard work.
