Motivational Mondays!
Motivational Mondays!
So, who's going to give us the motivation we need to start the very last week of 2024?
May I start? Please do.
I mean, mine is very simple.
I'm just going to encourage everyone that's listening to start trying to make a new year resolution.
Oh, I have one apparently.
It's very old school.
You just made it two minutes ago.
Yeah, that's nice. That's a good beginning as well.
Because you guys know that I have this calendar called self -love calendar, and I believe this is kind of like the final chance for us to give a Motivational Monday in 2024.
So what my calendar told me for this week is to explain happiness in a brand new way, which means to start to make a list of things that can make you happy.
And in my interpretation, that's some new hopes for next year.
So for example, in January 2024, I made this plan travel plan that when I was applying for my new passport, which was already expired like two years ago, I thought about maybe I could get Hong Kong and Macau travel pass as well, just in case sometime in the future in the next year, I can go travel there.
I've never been there before.
So I applied for a new passport and travel pass to Hong Kong and Macau at the same time.
And then 12 months later in December 2024, I actually got the chance to pay a visit to Hong Kong and Macau, and I found that trip very fruitful and very just refreshing to me as well.
So you never know which New Year resolution will come true at what time, but it brings you inspiration just to try to write it down and add that to your plan.
So come on, guys, just make one.
How long was that pass good for?
For one year, I think.
Oh, so you were almost out of time.
I know, right? But that pass, I mean, it's like a document thing you can renew every year, but that little card, that pass is for 10 years use.
You just need to reapply one every year.
Okay. So you have the card now, and whenever you want to, you can just apply to it.
Right, exactly. Yeah, so I think what you're saying here is, have a new year's resolution and manifest.
Make it happen. Precisely.
So wait, you've scratched that off the list.
So what's next? That's a good question.
Let me just think about it.
Future episode around.
We'll come back to you.
I'd like to follow Yuxian, because mine is also related to do things for the coming year.
And I got this from a book called The First 20 Hours, How to Learn Anything, Fast.
It's actually a book written by Josh Kaufman.
And he's talking about when you make a pre -commitment to spend at least 20 hours on a new skill, you significantly increase your chances of success.
So no matter what happens, no matter how long you've been delaying or pausing, no matter what happens, just make sure if you decide to learn a new skill or just do a new thing, then you have to commit your 20 hours.
So you can make sure you use that.
Well, you spend that 20 hours learning this new skill in the next months, in the next two months.
Doesn't really matter.
Just make sure you spend the first 20 hours, because that 20 hours will make you really realize whether or not you can learn the new skill, whether or not you really enjoy it, and whether or not you want to keep doing it.
That's an interesting concept.
So if you're trying something new, and it doesn't matter what that new thing is, give it at least 20 hours.
Yes. Because I guess the logic behind that is, in the beginning, you may not fall in love with this thing, whatever it is.
So if that's the case, then you may want to quit almost immediately.
But if you stick with it for at least 20 hours, your attitude towards that thing might change.
Might change. And within that 20 hours, you might already been practicing, well, what we call focused practice, meaning that you should isolate the most important sub skills, practicing with intensity and continuously adjusting based on the feedback.
Those are the key of focused practicing.
And also, you're breaking down the skill to different little pieces.
And the most important thing is if you learn it fast, then you're getting the fun of it faster.
You might change your attitudes towards it faster, like Steve has just said.
I mean, I like this.
I'm just worried that this might go against your new resolution.
It's not about spending 20 hours if you're 24 hour day.
It's also holding to try to learn things fast.
Well, it might not be my New Year's resolution, but I think it can help you achieve your new year's resolution for 2025.
That's a good one. I like that.
Let's move on to Steve's Motivational Monday now.
Apparently, this is a quote from a book by Dan Millman.
I don't know who that author is, and I don't know what the book was about.
There's some speculation online that Socrates said this, but then there's a lot of people saying that Socrates did not say it.
It was just a character from a book.
Anyway, let's just get to the quote because that's the point.
The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.
I like to think like this at the end of the year because I think the past for a lot of people can be like a chain, a ball and a chain, and it can stop you from moving forward if you focus too much on your past pain or your past failure or whatever that might be.
This quote reminds me, especially when we're about to roll into 2025, spend some time reflecting on the past, maybe things that didn't go so well this year, but use those to change for the future, not to feel depressed or sad or hurt your self -confidence or something like that.
Look at it, learn from it, look forward, and try to build on those mistakes.
Awesome. That is very well said.
In Chinese, we sometimes talk about the relationship between building something new and breaking or demolishing what's hold.
We talk about the relationship between poo and li, breaking and establishing.
My personal preference is towards xian li ho poo.
You first establish something that will work no matter if it works better or worse, just something new that will work, you establish that first.
Then you talk about ho poo.
Then you think about to destroy what hasn't been working so well or was working yet you want to improve.
Just make sure you have something to work on and do not, like Steve has just said, dwell on the old mistakes you've made.
Dwell on the shortcomings of the current system.
After all, the current system has helped you until now all the way.
So yeah, well said.
Yeah, like I said, at the end of the year it's a time of reflection, but just think about the positive stuff I guess more than the negative stuff.
And you can do this, you can take more than 20 hours to do this.
And manifest. So you don't get that banhui and you get that chilled out vibe.
There we just combined everything into one sentence.
It works pretty well.
And that brings us to the end of today's roundtable.
We'd love to hear your thoughts on today's topics.
