Headspace Studio. Hello and welcome back to Radio Headspace.
It's Dora. As I grow and evolve as a teacher, I'm learning what the balance is between preparing and staying present.
On one hand, it helps to be prepared, especially when doing presentations or guiding events.
But on the other hand, sometimes that same preparation can really take me out of the present moment.
I find myself searching for thoughts or thinking really hard to make sure I've hit all my points.
So for anyone who needs to perform in this way, whether it's giving a presentation or leading a meeting, in these instances, where can we strike the balance between thinking about our preparation and staying present, actively listening, and communicating when the spotlight is on us?
I've been reflecting on the times that I haven't been prepared or don't prepare as much, and I can trust my innate knowledge.
When it comes to meditation, I feel like there's not as much pressure for me to prepare for certain things.
I know that I have a wealth of knowledge that I can count on and tap into.
In college, I remember seeing the pyramid diagram that shows the six different levels of learning.
First, we remember, then we understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create.
level six which is creation means we're able to take what we've remembered and can begin to generate new ideas and ways of viewing things and I think this creation step is what has truly helped me to embody what I've learned by integrating my own experiences reviewing literature and allowing this information to help me gain a new or expanded perspective This means not only reading about meditation, but being a walking, breathing, living meditation.
Seeing mindfulness as a way of life and a way of being, and not just something I read about.
This whole episode stems from something fascinating that recently happened to me.
I was in my weekly mindfulness teacher's practicum and it was my day to present on stress resiliency.
resiliency. To be honest, I wasn't prepared at all.
I had browsed through my notes a few hours before class, but that was it.
And of course, my mind started running, telling the same old stories.
What excuse can I make up?
How could you not be prepared for this?
You had all week, yada, yada, yada.
After I gave my presentation and was receiving feedback from my peers, years they all shared that I was the most present that I had ever been and we've been in this course for six weeks so they have a pretty good idea of the things that I'm working on and the fact that I was unprepared they all agreed actually helped me.
The thing is despite not preparing all week I've started to practice meditation more frequently and sit for longer periods of time so even though I hadn't prepared with the given material I was prepared for my practice.
So, to be prepared or to not be prepared.
I think you can never be prepared enough.
But embodiment is an essential part of what can help us to stay present.
To be embodied means to have both mind and body involved in the process of learning and preparing.
This is why we just remember certain things without having to look them up.
We get those pings.
Besides practicing meditation, something else I've learned that can be helpful in both preparing you and helping you stay present is using a brain dump.
Being able to write out everything you know about a certain topic onto a piece of paper and then organizing what you feel most confident about, what you know, and what you need to learn more about.
From there, you can pretend to teach yourself the topic as if you were teaching a class.
Doing this is what's really helped me with putting my ideas into practice.
I'll leave it there for today, but if you want to learn more about being prepared, staying committed, or cultivating a more resilient mindset, check out my new collection with Raheem Sterling in the Headspace app.
