📋 Summary

Rabbit's Wish: Embracing One's Unique Strengths

The Burden of Being Small

In the folktale Rabbit's Wish, the protagonist is introduced as an exceptionally small creature. With her "tiny body," "tiny legs," and "nubby, fuzzy stumps" for ears, Rabbit feels "insignificant" compared to larger, more imposing animals like the elephant, giraffe, or bull. She views her own existence as "eensy weensy puny," lamenting that she is constantly at risk of becoming a "snack bar" or a "smorgasbord" for predators. Her dissatisfaction with her physical form drives her to seek out the Earth Spirit, the creator of all animals, to request a transformation into something larger and stronger.

The Test of Wit and Speed

The Earth Spirit challenges Rabbit's perception of herself, noting that she was "specifically fashioned" to be one of the "swiftest animals around" and "one of the smartest." Despite these compliments, Rabbit remains unconvinced, viewing her intellect and agility as insufficient defenses. The Earth Spirit agrees to grant her wish only if she can secure two impossible items: "a whisker from Lion" and "a feather from Eagle."

Rabbit, utilizing her "quick body and mind," devises a clever ruse. She approaches the predators under the guise of offering them a "top secret way" to double their meals. By tricking both the Lion and the Eagle into believing that plucking their own whiskers or feathers would magically create more food, she successfully obtains the required items. Her ability to escape their subsequent wrath by shimmying through her "narrow hole" burrow proves that her small size is actually her greatest tactical advantage.

The Consequences of Changing Nature

Upon presenting the items, the Earth Spirit grants Rabbit’s wish, transforming her into a larger creature. However, the physical change immediately reveals the folly of her desire. Rabbit finds her new body "all out of proportion," with "longer, heavier legs" that make her movements "awkward." When the Lion and Eagle return for revenge, Rabbit discovers that her new size prevents her from retreating into her "cozy burrow."

Trapped and vulnerable, she begs the Earth Spirit to restore her original form, admitting that she was "wrong" and should never have asked to be a different size. The Earth Spirit partially reverses the wish, shrinking Rabbit back to her original size but leaving her with long, sensitive ears.

Conclusion: Small Can Be Best of All

The story concludes with the revelation that Rabbit's new, long ears serve as an early warning system, allowing her to "hear [predators] coming from a mile away." Having learned that "bigger doesn't always mean better," Rabbit finally finds contentment. She stops wishing to be like the larger animals and embraces her identity as a "quick-footed, quick-witted creature." The narrative serves as a powerful reminder that every individual possesses unique qualities, and true strength often lies in appreciating the traits one might otherwise perceive as weaknesses.
