Beyond Keywords: Defining Your Core Values

In this episode, entrepreneur and author Robert Glazer joins the show to discuss his latest book, The Compass Within: A Little Story of the Values That Guide Us. Glazer argues that while most people acknowledge the importance of core values, they often treat them as vague, abstract concepts or mere "BS"—words on a wall that lack real-world application. To live an intentional life, one must move beyond single-word aspirations like "integrity" or "family" and establish a non-negotiable, decision-making framework.

The Core Validator: Turning Values into Action

Glazer defines a core value as a "non-negotiable principle that guides your behavior and decisions." He warns against common pitfalls, such as choosing values that are merely aspirational. Instead, he proposes the Core Validator, a set of criteria to ensure your values are actionable:

  1. Decision-Making: Can you use the value to make a specific choice?
  2. Discomfort: Does the opposite of your core value cause you visceral discomfort?
  3. Phrasing: Is it a phrase rather than a single word (e.g., "think of yourself less" instead of just "humble")?
  4. Objectivity: Can you objectively rate yourself on your adherence to this value?

Glazer emphasizes that true core values are "backward-looking"—they reflect who you have always been, often rooted in formative childhood experiences. By using the "electric fence test," he explains that most of us know when we have violated a value because it feels like driving a car into a tunnel wall; knowing your values beforehand acts like "turning on the lights," allowing you to stay in the middle of the road.

Harmony vs. Dissonance

Living in alignment with one's values creates harmony, while misalignment leads to dissonance. Dissonance is often the root cause of burnout, which Glazer suggests stems not from the volume of work, but from doing tasks that conflict with one's core operating system. He shares the example of a professional who quit a 19-year career upon realizing an "irreconcilable values difference," describing the subsequent relief as a massive burden being lifted.

Glazer also highlights the importance of evaluating your environment—whether it is your workplace, your community, or your relationships. If your social circle or town reinforces behaviors that contradict your core values, your willpower will eventually be exhausted. He advises individuals to seek environments that naturally pull them toward their desired behaviors.

Establishing a Hierarchy

One of the most advanced aspects of this work is establishing a hierarchy among your values. When two values conflict—such as "always tell the truth" versus "never cause harm"—a clear hierarchy allows you to navigate the dilemma with confidence. Glazer notes that identifying these priorities prevents the "night's sleep lost" over difficult moral choices.

A Call to Action

To begin this process, Glazer recommends answering six reflective questions (available at robertglaser.com/six), such as identifying environments where you feel highly engaged or analyzing the qualities others seek your help for. By avoiding the temptation to pick from a list of "buzzwords" and instead digging into the why behind your personal themes, you can create a compass that provides clarity for your career, family, and personal decisions. As Glazer concludes, this work is not about marketing yourself; it is about uncovering the fundamental principles that allow you to live with integrity and purpose.
