📋 Summary

Deepening Ties: Vladimir Putin’s Strategic Visit to India

President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to Delhi marks a significant moment in Russia-India relations, representing the Russian leader's first trip to India since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The discussions focused heavily on trade, defense, and strategic cooperation. While Western nations have criticized India for financing the war through oil purchases, local perspectives—such as that of resident Sanjay Kumar—emphasize the long-standing reliability of Russia as a partner in the face of terrorism and external threats.

Journalist Sushma Ramachandran highlights that the India-Russia trading relationship has been revitalized by the energy sector. Following the Ukraine war, Russia began offering oil at a discount, making it a critical source for India. Beyond energy, the two nations are exploring broader economic cooperation. Russia is reportedly looking to invest in Indian infrastructure, specifically railways, consumer goods, and joint manufacturing units, while seeking to utilize accumulated rupee balances. Furthermore, India’s pivot toward Russia is partly a reaction to US tariffs, which Ramachandran notes are among the heaviest faced by any US trading partner. Consequently, Russia is positioning itself as a new market for Indian exports, such as seafood, spices, and agricultural products, aiming to balance a historically one-sided trade relationship.

Pharmaceutical Turf Wars: Dr. Reddy’s vs. Novo Nordisk

In the pharmaceutical sector, India’s Dr. Reddy’s has secured a major legal victory against the Danish drug giant Novo Nordisk. The Delhi High Court has green-lit the production of a generic version of semaglutide, the key ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster weight loss and diabetes medications, Wegovy and Ozempic. Although Novo Nordisk attempted to block this via petition, the court’s ruling allows Dr. Reddy’s to proceed.

However, the ruling comes with significant caveats. Dr. Reddy’s is restricted from selling these generics in markets where patents are still active, including the domestic Indian market, until those patents expire. Despite this, the company plans to export to over 80 countries where the branded versions are currently unavailable. Adrienne Murray notes that while the patent landscape is complex, key markets like the US and EU will remain protected until 2031, whereas patents in India, China, and Brazil are expected to expire as early as March next year, setting the stage for a major shift in access to obesity treatments.

Meta’s Regulatory and Strategic Hurdles

Meta is currently navigating a wave of regulatory pressure across two continents. In Australia, the company is preemptively closing accounts for children under 16 ahead of a strict government-mandated social media ban effective December 10, facing potential fines of up to $33 million for non-compliance. Simultaneously, the European Commission is investigating Meta for potential anti-competition breaches regarding its integration of AI tools into WhatsApp. The EU fears that Meta's policies may stifle rival AI providers. Meta has dismissed these claims as "baseless," arguing that the introduction of chatbots puts a significant "strain on our systems."

From a financial perspective, Bill Blaine of Windshift Capital notes that Meta’s stock has surged as investor sentiment shifts away from the "imaginary metaverse"—a project that has seen funding cuts—toward Meta’s aggressive infrastructure spending on AI. Despite this, the broader market remains volatile, driven more by retail investors looking to "buy the dip" than by institutional confidence regarding potential interest rate cuts, especially as unemployment numbers remain stagnant.
