Embracing Your Authentic Self: Navigating Relationships with Your Past

Personal growth often leads to a profound dilemma: how do you interact with family members or old friends who refuse to acknowledge your evolution? As the host discusses, the challenge lies in the fact that people from your past often rely on their established perception of you—your "triggers" and "buttons"—to maintain a status quo that makes them feel comfortable. When you change, you disrupt that dynamic, which can lead to friction, awkwardness, or even hostility.

The Courage to Set Boundaries

A critical component of this transition is the ability to honor your own boundaries. The host shares a powerful anecdote about confronting a stepfather he once feared. By choosing not to let him into his home, the host had to stand up for himself, breaking the cycle of "drunk dad behavior" that had long controlled the family dynamic. He emphasizes that this wasn't just about the act of closing a door; it was about being "comfortable in your own skin" and refusing to sacrifice his integrity to appease someone else's expectations.

Moving Beyond the Facade

Many people struggle with "unfinished business"—repressed thoughts and suppressed emotions—because they are afraid of confrontation. The host warns that this repression often manifests physically, citing his own past stomach issues as a physical manifestation of swallowed anger. By choosing to be "perfectly congruent"—where your thoughts, feelings, and actions align—you stop putting on a "mask" or "facade." When you show up as your authentic self, you no longer carry the "dark cloud" of fear regarding how others perceive you.

The Risk of Authenticity

Embracing the "new you" is inherently risky. As the host notes, you might lose relationships if those around you are not comfortable with your growth. He suggests that if a connection cannot survive you being yourself, it may not be a relationship worth maintaining. He advocates for questioning why you remain around people who make it "dangerous to be yourself." While he clarifies he is not "victim shaming," he encourages listeners to evaluate their environment and prioritize those who "honor you honoring yourself."

Authenticity as a Catalyst for Trust

Finally, the host highlights that being authentic actually earns you more respect in the long run. By sharing a story about standing up to a boss, he illustrates that when you act with integrity, others often admire your courage. Even if people from your past attempt to spread rumors or question your changes, living authentically ensures that your true character is visible to others. As he concludes, the goal is to be "comfortable being yourself" in every situation. By doing so, you stop living in fear of the past and start creating a future aligned with your deepest values.

Always seek a professional when you're making choices about your mental health and well -being.
What do you do when somebody knows the past version of you and they treat you like that they treat you like the person you used to be but you're no longer that person that's the dilemma with family and it's something I ran into with a couple family members that I had to show up as a different person to them and it was hard it was very difficult because when people know you all your life and then you're a different person the next time they see you but they don't treat you like a different person what do you do how do you respond to that now the easy answer is just be yourself.
Just be that person and then see what happens but they know your triggers, they know your buttons, they know everything about you because they've known you all their lives.
Again, that's with family.
Family knows who you are or they believe who you are because to them that's who you are and who you've always been and who you'll always be.
