Over the Sea: A Tale of Courage, Deception, and Transformation

The Quest for a New Home

In the ancient days, long before the modern landscape of Australia was established, the native animals—including Koala, Kangaroo, and Platypus—resided in a "flat, wind-blown place" that was "desolate and barren." Seeking a better life, Eagle returned from a scouting mission across the sea with news of a paradise filled with "grassy plains," "red deserts," and "lush rainforests." However, the animals faced a daunting challenge: how to traverse the vast ocean to reach this fertile land.

The Dilemma of the Selfish Whale

The only vessel capable of carrying them was the "big bark canoe" belonging to Whale. The animals were well aware of Whale’s reputation; he was described as "the most tight-fisted" among them and notoriously selfish. When Starfish approached him to request the use of his boat, Whale flatly refused, boasting that the canoe was his "treasure, my jewel, my pride and joy." His rejection was absolute, as he repeatedly emphasized, "Never, ever, ever."

Starfish’s Deceptive Plan

Undeterred by the "whale of a rejection," Starfish devised a plan to help her friends. Knowing Whale would never willingly share, she decided to use distraction. She offered to groom Whale, claiming she could remove the "pesky little critters" (siamates) crawling on his head. As she performed this "heavenly scratching," she lulled the vain Whale into a deep nap. This gave Eagle, Koala, Kangaroo, and Platypus the window they needed to untie the canoe and set sail for their new home.

The Transformation and the Blowhole

When Whale eventually awoke and realized he had been "tricked, conned, [and] sucked in," he gave chase. In his fury, he dove and spiraled, causing Starfish to puncture his head. This accidental injury created a permanent "gaping hole"—the blowhole—from which he now spouts water. Starfish herself was tossed into the air, landing on a jagged rock. The impact caused her once-straight arms to become "curved and bumpy," covered in the tiny spines seen on starfish today.

The Hardship of the Journey

As Whale pursued the fleeing animals, the group struggled to paddle fast enough. Koala, whose arms were originally "skinny and scrawny," had to exert immense force to propel the canoe. Through her relentless paddling, her arms became "strong and muscular." The animals eventually reached the fertile shores of Australia, securing a new life. Starfish, however, chose to remain on the ocean floor to hide from the vengeful Whale, who still swims the coast searching for the one who "pulled the wool over his eyes."

Conclusion: The Spirit of Helping

This folktale serves as a reminder that even the smallest creatures can be pivotal helpers. By orchestrating the move, Starfish ensured the survival of her community. The story invites listeners to reflect on their own capacity to help others, emphasizing that "helping and being helped can feel amazing," regardless of one’s size or stature.
