📋 Summary

A Desolate Beginning and a Promised Land

In the ancient days, the animals that currently populate Australia—such as the koala, kangaroo, and platypus—resided in a distant, "flat, wind-blown place" that was "desolate and barren." Faced with this lack of resources, the Eagle returned from a scouting mission across the sea with news of a paradise featuring "grassy plains," "dazzling beaches," and "red deserts." However, the animals faced a significant "dilemma": they had no way to cross the vast ocean to reach this fertile new home.

The Problem of the Selfish Whale

The animals identified Whale’s "big bark canoe" as the only vessel capable of transporting them all. However, they were well aware of Whale’s reputation as the "most tight-fisted" and "bossy" creature who refused to share his "treasure," "jewel," and "pride and joy." Despite their apprehension, Starfish attempted to negotiate, only to be met with a flat refusal: "Never, ever, ever, ever, ever." Whale’s stubbornness and selfishness left the animals in a "pickle," forcing them to devise a more cunning plan to secure passage.

The Deceptive Distraction

Starfish orchestrated a plan to "distract" Whale while the others made off with the canoe. She approached Whale under the guise of offering a "favor"—to remove the "pesky parasites" known as siamates from his head. Exploiting Whale’s vanity and desire for comfort, Starfish convinced him to close his eyes and "nod off" while she performed the grooming. Once Whale was "out cold," the other animals—including Wombat, Echidna, and Emu—successfully untied the canoe and set sail for their new home.

The Consequence of Transformation

When Whale eventually discovered the deception, he flew into a rage, plunging under the waves and leaping out of the sea. In the ensuing struggle, Starfish held on so tightly to Whale’s head that she punctured the skin, creating a "gaping hole." This accident resulted in the first "blowhole," from which a "spurt of water" erupted.

The physical toll of this journey left the animals forever changed. Starfish, tossed through the air, landed on a rock, and her once "straight and smooth" arms became "curved and bumpy" and "covered in tiny spines." Similarly, as the animals paddled frantically to escape, Koala’s "skinny and scrawny" arms grew "strong and muscular" from the immense effort required to outpace the pursuing Whale.

A Legacy of Migration

Ultimately, the animals reached the "beautiful, fertile land" of Australia. While they settled on the continent, Starfish chose to live on the "bottom of the sea" to remain hidden from the vengeful Whale, who continues to patrol the coast to this day. This folktale serves as a narrative explanation for the physical characteristics of these animals and highlights the theme that, regardless of size, every individual has the capacity to be a helper in solving communal problems.
