📋 Summary

The Grim Reality of Survival: Survivor's Guilt

The first story, "Survivor's Guilt," delves into a dark and little-known "custom of the sea." Set in 1821, four men—including Captain George Pollard and his cousin Owen Coffin—found themselves adrift in the Pacific Ocean for 94 days after their whaling ship, the Essex, was struck by a whale. Facing starvation, they resorted to the "delicate question": a desperate, forced agreement to draw lots to determine who would sacrifice their life to sustain the others.

The process was cold and methodical. Owen, the youngest at 18, facilitated the drawing of lots, which ultimately marked him for execution. The narrative highlights the chilling composure of the men, who viewed this as a "sacred custom" that, once begun, could not be stopped. Following Owen's death, the remaining crew members, pushed to the brink of insanity, consumed his flesh to survive. When rescuers eventually found the survivors, George and Charles, they were discovered "chewing on human finger bones," appearing "totally feral" and having completely lost their "grip on reality." This harrowing event later served as the primary inspiration for Herman Melville's literary masterpiece, Moby Dick.

The Unsolved Mystery of the Kaz 2

The second story recounts the baffling disappearance of three experienced sailors—Dez Batten, Jim Tunstead, and Peter Tunstead—aboard the 35-foot catamaran, the Kaz 2. On April 15, 2007, the trio set off from Australia for what was supposed to be a safe, well-planned "trip of a lifetime." However, the situation quickly turned into a "nightmare."

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the vessel behaving erratically over the following days. Despite the crew’s strict safety protocols—including staying close to the shore—the boat was spotted making a "90 degree turn" toward open water and later "doubling back" to the same location. By April 18, a surveillance helicopter flagged the vessel, noting its "badly damaged sails" and lack of response to radio calls. When authorities finally boarded the abandoned boat, they found an "eerily quiet" scene. Evidence suggested the men had been present moments before: a fishing rod was cast, a "blue mug of coffee" sat on a table, and the engine was still idling. Inside, a computer remained on and plates of food were left out, yet the men had vanished without a trace. Despite an extensive search, Dez, Jim, and Peter were never found, leaving the fate of the Kaz 2 as a haunting, "unsolved mystery" of the sea.
