📋 Summary

The Vanishing of Skylar Neese: A Calculated Betrayal

In July 2012, the quiet college town of Morgantown, West Virginia, became the backdrop for a harrowing true crime story. Skylar Neese, a 16-year-old honors student, vanished from her family home without a trace, leaving behind a mystery that would eventually reveal a deep, calculated malice hidden behind the mask of friendship.

The Disappearance

Skylar was a beloved only child, described by her father, Dave Neese, as "full of love and life." On the night of July 5, 2012, after returning from a shift at Wendy's, she told her parents she was tired and headed to her bedroom. The next morning, her parents found her bed empty, her window unlocked, and a mesh screen tucked away in her closet. A bench had been moved beneath her window, suggesting she had snuck out. Initially, the police and her parents held onto the hope that she had simply run away, a common occurrence for teenagers, but the lack of contact for months turned a hopeful search into a chilling investigation.

The Deception of Friends

Early in the investigation, Skylar's close friends, Sheila and Rachel, claimed they had dropped Skylar off a block from her apartment after a night of smoking marijuana. However, surveillance footage later captured a car pulling up to the apartment complex at 12:30 a.m., with Skylar willingly entering the vehicle. It was later revealed that this car belonged to Sheila. For months, Sheila and Rachel maintained their web of lies, even as the community searched desperately for their missing friend.

The Brutal Truth

The case broke open in December 2012 after Rachel suffered a nervous breakdown and confessed to the police. The revelation was horrifying: Skylar’s murder was not a crime of passion or a random act, but a "planned" execution. Tension had been brewing in their friend group, with Sheila and Rachel allegedly "deprioritizing" Skylar and excluding her.

Rachel confessed that the girls had brought a "kill kit"—including shovels, bleach, and trash bags—to a remote location in Pennsylvania. The plan was meticulous: they lured Skylar to a secluded spot, intentionally left a lighter in the car to force Skylar to turn her back, and signaled each other to attack on the count of "three."

A Heartless Conclusion

Skylar was brutally stabbed by both girls. As she died, she asked, "Why are you doing this to me?" but received no answer. The pair abandoned her body, attempting to cover it with rocks and logs.

During their trials, the contrast between the two perpetrators was stark. Rachel expressed remorse, while Sheila remained cold, even smirking during proceedings. Most infamously, after the remains were identified, Sheila tweeted: "We really did go on three."

Sheila was sentenced to life in prison, and Rachel received a 30-year sentence. The murder of Skylar Neese remains a haunting reminder of how easily trust can be weaponized by those closest to us, turning a simple night out into an unimaginable tragedy.
