📋 Summary

The Dilemma of Kindness

The story "One Good Turn" explores the moral complexities of reciprocity through the eyes of a Rabbit. After hearing a cry for help, Rabbit discovers a Snake trapped under a "big rock." Despite being natural enemies—as Rabbit notes, the world is often a "snake-eat-rabbit world"—her conscience compels her to act. She strikes a bargain: if she frees the Snake, he must promise not to eat her. Driven by a belief that "one good turn deserves another," Rabbit uses her strength to push the rock aside, saving the Snake’s life.

The Betrayal of Gratitude

Immediately upon his release, the Snake reveals his true nature. He dismisses his promise, claiming he is too "famished" to care about his word and arguing that "self-preservation is the first law of life." The Snake views the Rabbit not as a savior, but as a "mouth-watering meal." When the Rabbit attempts to flee, she becomes "snagged in a vine," leaving her vulnerable. The Snake prepares to strike, embodying the ungratefulness and "evil" that the Rabbit had hoped to avoid by acting with compassion.

The Wisdom of the Fox

Just as the Snake is about to attack, a Fox arrives, annoyed by the commotion. Recognizing the Fox as the "wisest, cleverest animal around," the Rabbit presents her case. The Fox, acting as a mediator, demands to see the scene of the incident. She forces the pair to "reenact the scene" to fully understand the dispute.

Restoration of Justice

Through a clever ruse, the Fox convinces the Snake to return to his original position under the rock to ensure the reenactment is accurate. As the Snake slithers back, the Fox prompts the Rabbit to push the stone back over him until he is once again "smushed" and "squashed." By trapping the Snake in his original predicament, the Fox restores balance. She concludes that "one good turn does deserve another," but emphasizes that the Rabbit deserved better than the treachery she received. The story concludes with the Snake left "stuck between a rock and a hard place," serving as a timeless lesson on the importance of integrity and the consequences of violating the trust of those who offer kindness.
