The hosts emphasize that climate change is the primary driver behind these warming oceans, threatening the stability of the entire reef.

The "Coral Killer": Crown-of-Thorns Starfish

Beyond temperature-related bleaching, the reef faces a biological threat from the "Crown-of-Thorns starfish." These "corillavores"—animals that feed exclusively on coral—can grow up to two-and-a-half feet long. Their population outbreaks, potentially triggered by weather phenomena like "El Niño," lead to massive destruction of the reef. With a single female capable of laying 65 million eggs, the potential for an ecological takeover is immense.

Innovative Solutions: Technology and Nature

To combat this, researchers at the Queensland University of Technology have developed the "Kotsbot" (Crown-of-Thorns Starfish bot), an underwater drone designed to hunt these predators. The robot uses cameras to identify the starfish and injects them with a solution containing "sodium bisulfite" (derived from cow bile) to stop them from destroying the coral.

Additionally, the reef has a natural defender: the "giant triton sea snail." These predators can reach 50 centimeters in length and are among the few creatures that eat the crown-of-thorns starfish. Even more fascinating is that the mere scent of the triton snail acts as a deterrent; when the starfish detects the chemicals given off by the snail, it "freaks out and bolts." By utilizing both robotic intervention and the natural predatory instincts of the triton snail, scientists hope to manage the population of these starfish and give the coral a chance to recover.
