📋 Summary

Noclip Crew Cast: From Oblivion Remastered to Wrestling Mania

In episode 224 of the Noclip podcast, the crew gathers for a wide-ranging discussion covering the surprise release of the Oblivion Remastered edition, indie horror gaming, and a deep dive into the recent wrestling weekend in "Sin City."

The Return of Oblivion

Jeremy and the host discuss the unexpected launch of the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster. The release, which arrived without a lengthy buildup, has sparked debate regarding its visual direction. While the original game was noted for its vibrant, "colorful lush green" aesthetic and "big blue bursting sky," the remaster appears to lean into a more "muted color palette." Despite initial concerns about the art style, the hosts note that the "facial animation" and "fire effects" look impressive, running on Unreal Engine 5. The gameplay feels "snappier" than the original, though the crew jokes about the absurdity of the game's economy and the inclusion of the infamous "horse armor" in the deluxe edition.

Indie Horror: Look Outside

Jeremy introduces a standout indie title, Look Outside, a survival horror RPG that he describes as "pixel art" and "grotesque in the most fascinating way." The game’s structure is uniquely punishing; players can only save their progress by returning to their apartment after "pushing their luck" in the building. The writing is described as "funny but not jokey," maintaining a tension that mimics the unease of an apocalyptic, Lovecraftian scenario. The host praises the developer, Francis Colombe, for creating a game that manages to be deeply unsettling with a clever use of "economy of animation."

Wrestling in Sin City

Frank provides a passionate account of his time at a wrestling festival in Las Vegas, which coincided with WrestleMania weekend. He describes the experience as "one of the best weekends of my life," highlighting the joy of meeting favorite wrestlers and even interacting with them in Japanese. Frank recounts the intensity of the shows, specifically mentioning a "no rope barbed wire match" featuring the legendary Sabu, which he described as "shocking" and "terrifying." The discussion touches on the cultural exchange between Japanese wrestlers experiencing American life—such as their fascination with "yellow school buses"—and the camaraderie found at WrestleCon.

Reflections on Travel and Media

As the episode winds down, the hosts reflect on their favorite filming locations for Noclip documentaries. Japan remains a top destination for its "incredibly clean" environment and "spiritual affinity." They also share anecdotes from their travels, including a bizarre stay in an English bed and breakfast that felt like a "70s English folk horror movie." The episode concludes with a look forward to a bonus podcast episode, where the crew plans to "stare into the Nietzschean void" by reviewing the critically panned Borderlands film, proving that even in the world of gaming, there is always room for a little "morbid curiosity."
