Exploring the Unknown: A Road Trip of Oddities

In this episode of Roundabout, hosts Jonathan and Stephanie Fields share the story of their recent "oddities at altitude" road trip through Colorado. After 32 years together, the couple has mastered the art of traveling, shifting their focus from conventional sightseeing to discovering the weird, human-made wonders that often go unnoticed by locals.

The Spiritual and the Surreal in Crestone

Their journey began in Crestone, a small town with a population of about 140, known as an "eclectic spiritual center." The couple noted the area's unique atmosphere, which hosts roughly 18 to 20 different spiritual and religious centers, ranging from Tibetan Buddhism to various metaphysical shrines. They stayed in the "Mother Ship Dome of Christopolis," a wooden geodesic dome that felt like standing inside a "vortex." The experience was further enhanced by the town's "dark sky sanctuary" status, where the night sky was filled with "a bazillion stars twinkling down into the mountains."

Encounters with UFOs and Alligators

As they ventured further south, the couple embraced the "quirky" side of their trip. They stopped at a UFO watchtower, a roadside attraction born from the stories of truckers who frequented a local truck stop in 2020. The site, filled with "lifetime figurines of aliens" and spaceship sculptures, serves as a testament to the community's shared curiosity about the unknown.

Shortly after, they encountered an "alligator sanctuary at 8,000 feet." The facility began as a tilapia farm, but evolved into a home for rescued alligators, including a famous 18-foot albino star of various movies. The experience was both memorable and intense; after holding a "sweet" baby alligator, the couple had a tense moment at a rickety fence where a "giant old mad" alligator charged at them, hissing and growling, prompting a swift retreat.

The Challenges of Glamping and Sand Dunes

Their accommodation at a revived 1955 frontier drive-in theater offered a mix of charm and comedy. Their stay in a "Boho Shiek yurt" turned into a survival challenge when they accidentally "glitched the stove" in the middle of a freezing night, leading to a temperature drop to 33 degrees inside.

Their final adventure took them to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Navigating the "massive, massive sand dunes" required them to cross a frigid snow-melt river, leaving them with "sopping wet" socks. Despite the physical challenge and the inevitable struggle of driving home four hours while "absolutely wrapped with sand," they found the experience "breathtaking."

Lessons in Partnership and Presence

Reflecting on their journey, Jonathan and Stephanie emphasized that their ability to travel well together was not always a given. They shared that early in their marriage, they had several "disaster trips." However, they learned to "ask the right questions" and align their expectations before setting off.

Now empty nesters, the couple views these road trips as essential to their relationship. Even during incredibly busy periods, they argue that it is vital to "make time" for exploration. As Jonathan concluded, the trip served as a poignant reminder to "savor all the moments" and break away from the regular routine to find new ways to learn and grow together.
