📋 Summary

The 15th Floor: A Quiet Tragedy in Xi'an

In 2016, an apartment building in Xi'an, China, was haunted by the presence of a 43-year-old woman known only by her family name, Wu. The residents avoided her due to her "bizarre and kind of alarming" behavior, which included screaming incoherently and launching sudden, aggressive attacks against passersby in the hallway. However, the residents eventually chose to ignore her, believing she was simply mentally unwell. The situation turned tragic when the woman suddenly went silent in early February. It was later discovered that she had become trapped in a malfunctioning elevator between the 11th and 10th floors. Because she remained "in absolute silence" and did not call for help, maintenance crews—who were unable to fix the elevator initially—cut the power, unaware that she was inside. She ultimately died of dehydration after days of agonizing isolation, with scratch marks inside the car serving as a haunting testament to her desperate, failed attempts to "claw her way out."

Rabbit Hole: A Fatal Miscalculation

On New Year's Day 2015, Stephen Winfrey, a 50-year-old man struggling with depression, ventured into a forest in South Yorkshire to hunt rabbits with his ferrets and dog. When he failed to appear at a family lunch, a search was initiated. He was found the following day, deceased, with his head trapped inside a rabbit hole. The police determined his death was an accident; he had likely crawled into the narrow opening to retrieve a ferret or rabbit, only for his head to become stuck. As he labored to dig the entrance wider, he depleted the limited oxygen, leading to suffocation. The scene was marked by "deep divots" where he had frantically clawed at the earth, a futile attempt to save himself before he succumbed to the environment.

My Brother's Keeper: The Collier Brothers' Fortress of Trash

In 1947, New York City police investigated a report of a dead body at the mansion of Langley and Homer Collier. The brothers were wealthy, brilliant recluses who had filled their home with "25,000 books," human body parts in glass jars, and mounds of trash, creating a labyrinthine fortress to protect themselves from perceived intruders. The investigation revealed a grim reality: Homer had died of starvation, trapped in a house where he was blind and infirm. Langley, who had been scavenging for oranges—which he believed would cure Homer's blindness—had died days earlier. While navigating a "two-foot-wide tunnel" through the trash, Langley had accidentally triggered a booby trap, causing heavy metal boxes to crash down and pin him. Unable to free himself or reach his brother, Langley died, leaving Homer to perish slowly. The mystery was only solved when police discovered Langley's skeleton, partially eaten by rats, buried deep within the debris of the brothers' self-imposed prison.
