Trapped in Silence: Three True Tales of No Way Out

This episode of the podcast explores the harrowing experiences of individuals who found themselves in inescapable situations. Through three distinct narratives, the host illustrates the fragility of life and the terrifying reality of being physically trapped with no means of rescue.

A Friendly Wave: The Tragedy of Robert Hamm

In the first story, a young girl on a newspaper route encounters an elderly man, Robert Hamm, sitting on his screened-in porch in a "very peculiar position." His legs were "straight up in the air," appearing as if he were waving between his legs. Initially dismissed as eccentric behavior or a misunderstanding of perspective, the situation turned dire when the girl realized the man stopped waving back.

Upon investigation by the girl’s mother, it was discovered that Robert had attempted to sit on a trash can, which collapsed, leaving him folded in a "V position." This trapped him in a state where his legs were pressed against his torso, restricting his breathing and ability to call for help. Tragically, Robert died of a heart attack while neighbors simply walked by, unaware that his "friendly wave" was actually a desperate plea for aid.

Lookout: The Sinking of HMS Umpire

The second story recounts the 1941 disaster of the British submarine, HMS Umpire. Following engine failure, the submarine was struck by a convoy ship, causing it to sink to the bottom. With the forward torpedo room flooded, 34 crew members were trapped.

Survival depended on an arduous process involving a "lockout chamber," a claustrophobic space that required equalization with seawater before the escape hatch could be opened. Sailors had to hold their breath, flood the chamber, and use "Davis escape gear" to reach the surface. The narrative highlights the agonizing decision of 20 men to seal the engine room door, effectively condemning 14 others to ensure their own survival. Junior officer Edward Jones and a few others faced a similar plight in the "conning tower," where they were forced to wait in rising, electrified water until they could swim to safety.

Wrong Button: The Elevator Horror

The final story details a grim discovery in New Taipei City. A 76-year-old man named Zhang accidentally pressed the sixth floor instead of his destination. When the doors opened, he was confronted by the body of Chen Yanchui, a dementia patient who had gone missing a week prior.

Chen had stepped off the elevator on the sixth floor into a narrow space between the doors and a private metal gate installed by a resident. Unable to reopen the elevator, she remained trapped in this tiny landing, eventually passing away from dehydration. When Zhang’s elevator stopped on the sixth floor, her body, which was in "rigor mortis," fell onto him. The trauma was so severe that Zhang was initially unable to move the obstruction to close the elevator doors, requiring his daughter’s intervention over the phone to help him gather the strength to clear the path. The owner of the sixth-floor residence, while not criminally charged for the gate that created the trap, eventually paid a significant settlement to Chen’s family.
