The study published in Science revealed that the more a chatbot was pushed to be persuasive using factual claims, the more likely it was to produce "inaccurate" information—essentially "making stuff up." Furthermore, models advocating for right-leaning candidates were found to deliver more inaccurate claims, mirroring the patterns of misinformation observed on social media platforms.

A New Era of Political Campaigning

The experts conclude that this research serves as a warning for policymakers. Because users often interact with chatbots without knowing the "motivations of the designers" or the hidden agendas behind the prompts, there is a risk that elections could be influenced by whoever creates the most convincing AI or pays for specific political advocacy. As the podcast suggests, this represents a "new type of information battle," urging users to remain skeptical of the information provided by AI, regardless of how factual or conversational it may appear.
