The Architectural Craft of Blueprints: A Conversation with Tonda

In this episode of The Game Maker’s Notebook, host Tonda discusses the long, winding journey of developing the architectural adventure game Blueprints, providing an intimate look into the transition from a career in commercial filmmaking to the world of solo game development.

The Inciting Incidents: From Filmmaking to Code

Tonda describes his path as being paved by two "inciting incidents." The first was a childhood fascination with early computing, specifically MS-DOS titles like Beast and the early coding environment ZZT. However, his professional trajectory was initially locked into filmmaking. After moving to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue cinema, Tonda spent years directing music videos and commercials—a path he describes as "soulless" but necessary for funding his creative ambitions.

His pivot to game development was triggered in 2016 when he rediscovered his passion for logic and systems through web development. After stumbling upon Unity and realizing the barrier to entry was far lower than he had imagined, he felt a sense of urgency: "I wish I had spent the last 10 years doing this." Despite initial fears that he was "too late" in his 30s, he dove into Unity and produced a working prototype of Blueprints within just three months.

Designing Blueprints: Restraint and Serendipity

Blueprints is described as an "architectural adventure game," blending mystery, strategy, and puzzle mechanics. Tonda emphasizes that the core mechanic—choosing between three rooms every time a player approaches a door—was inspired by "drafting" concepts from tabletop board games.

Throughout the development, Tonda prioritized "design chunkiness" and simplicity. He argues that modern video games often suffer from "over-complex systems" that hide a lack of gameplay, whereas board games retain a "granularity" that he finds more compelling. This philosophy of restraint allowed him to maintain a clean, manageable design space: "I don't think I ever had to scale back complexity... I am free when I think of a cool idea to explore it because I'm not risking overburdening the core system."

The Art of Atmosphere

Sound design plays a pivotal role in the game’s immersive quality. Tonda explains that he intentionally uses music sparingly, preferring to let the "sounds of a house"—such as the hum of a lamp or the draft under a door—establish the character of the environment. By withholding music, he creates a "happy bonus" where the score, composed by the dark doom jazz duo Trig and Gusset, becomes significantly more impactful when it finally arrives. This approach reflects his belief that atmosphere is built through environmental storytelling rather than constant musical cues.

The Final Stretch and Future Plans

Reflecting on the grueling final year of production, Tonda notes the importance of his collaboration with Fury Studios for optimization and porting. He admits that he had to make the "hard decision" to cut certain features, such as a retro arcade game titled Dirigi Blocks, to focus on stability and bug fixes.

Looking ahead, Tonda confirms that while he is not interested in creating major DLC, he intends to release one "substantial update" to finalize his original vision for the game. For Tonda, Blueprints is the culmination of a long journey, a project defined by the serendipity of its procedural nature and his commitment to a singular, cohesive aesthetic vision.
