For sex-changing species, this effectively removes all the males from a population, forcing younger females to transition prematurely and resulting in "fewer fish babies."

Furthermore, environmental degradation poses a direct threat to the chemical signaling required for reproduction. Climate change, through ocean acidification caused by carbon dioxide, can "scramble" the chemical messages lobsters use to communicate, while pollution from land-based chemicals can disrupt these sensitive systems. Even in the deep sea, industrial interests like mining for "rare earth minerals" threaten to "scrape up" the sponges and eggs of deep-sea octopuses, preventing successful reproduction in habitats we have only recently begun to understand.

A Call for a New Relationship with the Ocean

Hart concludes by emphasizing that our connection to the ocean is intimate and reciprocal. To safeguard the "abundance that ocean life provides," we must adopt a more precautionary approach. This involves:
